American Airlines wins approval to replace in-flight manuals with iPads

President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney in one of 2012's most crucial swing states, according to a new poll. Obama leads the Republican nominee 45 percent to 50 percent in Ohio, according to the latest survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling. The survey also found that Ohioans believe Democrats had the better national convention. The 5-point lead in the latest PPP poll is an improvement for Obama, but still well within the margin of error -- in its August poll of the state, the president held at 3-point lead over Romney, holding steady from July. ...

Canadian Mint taxing musician for using image of penny in protest

Musician Dave Gunning, in a photo from his website (Chris Smith)It's going to take more than a pretty penny for one musician to pay off the Royal Canadian Mint, which has levied a hefty tax against the artist for appropriating an image of the nation's outgoing coinage on his latest album.

Dave Gunning says he wanted to pay tribute to the Canadian penny, which will cease production at the end of 2012, on his upcoming album, "No More Pennies."

However, CBC News reports that once the Royal Canadian Mint heard about the album cover concept, it told Dave Gunning that for every 2,000 albums sold, he must fill out an application asking for permission to continue using the image, then pay $1,200 in fees.

Gunning's album cover shows a person at a lunch counter attempting to come up with enough change to pay for a cup of coffee.

In response to the Mint's fees, Gunning has asked fans to bring pennies to shows on his upcoming fall tour so he can afford to continue selling the album, which debuts Sept. 18. The Mint has waived the fees on the first 2,000 copies but said Gunning must pay for all future sales.

"The Mint has an Intellectual Property Policy in place to protect its IP assets, which includes coin images, and ensure their appropriate use," a Mint spokeswoman told the CBC. "In instances where an approved use is being made for commercial gain (as would be the case with an ad campaign or selling music CDs), royalty fees are applied."

The Royal Canadian Mint has made news several times this year: First with the announcement in March that it would discontinue the penny, then again in April, with the announcement of a glow-in-the-dark quarter.

Ironically, the Royal Canadian Mint found out about the album cover only after an employee there told administrators, reportedly thinking the Mint would be supportive of the gesture.

"Turns out I have a big fan who works for the Canadian Mint," Gunning told the CBC. "He got the idea, 'The Canadian Mint should get behind this. Maybe we could actually sell the CD in our gift shop.'"

Everything Everywhere announces the UK's first major LTE service, EE: combines Orange and T-Mobile networks

Everything Everywhere announces the UK's first major LTE service, EE combines Orange and TMobile networks

Finally, after gaining approval from UK regulator Ofcom, Everything Everywhere announced today that it's calling its incoming 4G service EE. It's a new company, new network and a new brand, we're being told here at London's Science Museum. Officially formed of the combined network might of Orange and T-Mobile, the union has been allowed to use 4G services on its 1800 MHz spectrum starting today, although we're still waiting to hear precisely what hardware will be compatible with the UK's first LTE network. EE will also start offering a fiber service.

Orange and T-Mobile will still exist, with the colored carrier concentrating on giving customers "more from their phone" (whatever that consists of), while T-Mobile will appeal to customers chasing value. We've been told both 4G and fiber offerings will be launching soon, though this will also depend on hardware availability. We're also hoping there will be more on the cards than just a WiFi dongle, but more as we get it. The first cities to get the service are London, Cardiff, Birmingham and Bristol, with 16 more launching by the end of the year -- including the likes of Manchester and Southampton. EE puts that at covering a third of the population of the UK.

We were given an ever-so brief glimpse at incoming devices for the new 4G service -- Brits can expect to pick up devices from Samsung, Nokia, Huawei and more "in the coming weeks" -- the same timeframe that with encompass the launch of the network to its customers after testing. (The offering from EE will also include MiFi and USB dongles.) It even dropped a iPhone-tinged "one more thing" that more devices are incoming. Possibly something we'll hear about tomorrow.

America's Got Talent Dance Troupe Nearly Booted from NYC Hotel

The Untouchables will perform tonight on the finals of America's Got Talent.

But it was this dance troupe's naughty performances inside a New York City hotel over the weekend that almost resulted in its departure from the premises.

According to TMZ, the kids - ages 8 to 13 - stirred up some serious trouble at the undisclosed location, being loud and even tossing objects out the window. Producers were forced to step in and urge management to give the children another chance before tossing them to the curb.

Confirms an establishment insider:"We gave them a verbal warning to let them know if the problem persisted they would be kicked out of the hotel."

For now, the group remains at the hotel. But who knew The Untouchables had to much in common with Charlie Sheen?

NEW YORK (AP) ? "Saturday Night Live" is adding three new performers for the upcoming season after the departures of Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg.

The sketch comedy show announced Monday that Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant and Tim Robinson will be joining "SNL" for its 38th season.

Strong comes from the touring company of the Chicago improv theater Second City. She will be a cast member.

Bryant hails from the iO Theater in Chicago, and Robinson is an alumnus of Second City. They will be featured players.

It's a period of transition for "SNL," which will enter its new season without Samberg, Wiig or Abby Elliott. Many also expect Jason Sudeikis to soon depart.

    • Taylor Candelario? ?(1 - 65' 1st?of the year)

The UBC Okanagan Heat women's squad were all business Sunday afternoon against the Douglas College Royals as the Heat were victorious 3-0 at the Nonis Sports Field.

Defending their home turf in commanding fashion, the Heat notched their first win of the PACWEST regular season and moved their record to one win and one loss after the first weekend of league play.

"We played stronger today," noted Heat coach Claire Paterson. "We played to our strengths a bit more. We moved the ball around to feet, which helped us be successful."

Second year forward Kirsten Dodds (Vernon, BC) opened the scoring for the Heat in the 31st minute off of a scramble in front of the Royals net, nicking the ball past the Royals keeper to give the Heat a 1-0 lead.

The Heat midfield created a lot of excellent scoring opportunities, most notably from the boot of freshman Alana Hazell (Midfield, Kelowna, BC). Hazell had a scoring opportunity herself with a powerful shot on goal just before halftime, but it was denied by a great diving save from second year goalkeeper Ashley Dunn (Maple Ridge, BC).

Further offensive pressure from the Heat in the second half generated a pair of goals. The first was scored by Lana Finley (2nd year, Forward, Kelowna, BC) off of a beautiful cross from sophomore Kirsten Dodds (Forward, Vernon, BC), and the second was nicely chipped in by freshman Taylor Candelario (Forward, Honolulu, HI) from outside of the 18 yard box.

"We had some great performances from our first year players," added Paterson. "Alana Hazell did fantastic for us in the middle of the field, and Taylor Candelario did well when she got in, ripping a fantastic shot for the second goal. We had some good spark with those younger players."

The Heat hit the road to take on Langara College next Saturday, while the winless Royals (0-2-0) take on the Capilano Blues.

The UBC Okanagan Heat will be back on their home pitch, the Nonis Sports Field, Sunday September 30 at 1:00 p.m. when they host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in a rematch of last year?s provincial final.

HEAT NOTES:?Christine Tallon, a third year keeper from Kamloops who had previously played for the University of Alberta Golden Bears, played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Heat to earn the win and the shutout. The last time a keeper other than Sabrina Gasparac (5th year, Langley, BC) earned a win for UBC Okanagan was Sep. 20, 2009 when Teala MacKowetsky (West Kelowna, BC) shutout these same Douglas College Royals in Kelowna.

Madigascars

(Author's note: This is my first attempt at anything resembling rap/hip-hop lyrics, and I wasn't sure where to put them. I'm sure a Designer will designate them to the appropriate area if need be, but here they are for now. Tell me what you think. I just got really inspired.)

Can you build a monument to represent yourself,
And just watch as it cracks and wears within itself?
It's that eating feeling, the kind that no one understands.
Like you wrote the book; It takes a mastermind to make a master plan.
Ain't nobody living like they said they would.
I got reprimanded, like I said I should.
So now you go, throwin' stones, act as if you never been alone.
Fightin' cause, keep effects, all it takes to mentally wreck,
Wreck yourself and everything that makes you up,
Becoming broken down into something that you cannot trust:
The darker side, the one who stops you from givin' up,
But turns you into a monster, and doesn't even give a fuck.

Ain't no knowin', what's been goin' on in my head today.
But I keep it bottled up inside; it'll all be forgotten anyway.
Ain't no stoppin', what's been broken is swept under the streets,
Of the city block that's in my brain,
Causing me a million miles of pain.

Could you write a testament against yourself?
And utterly, completely misrepresent yourself?
Then turn around and tell 'em "It's over, I'm okay."
Change direction, just turn around and walk away?
But you can't; it only takes one shot 'till they all hate you.
If you ain't got the same blackened souls as they do.
It's trial by execution, execution by fire.
They tie you to the polls of a popularity contest.
They beat you black and blue before you feel the heat;
You see the fire in their eyes, as they're screamin' through the streets,
Just

Ain't no knowin', what's been goin' on in my head today.
But I keep it bottled up inside; it'll all be forgotten anyway.
Ain't no stoppin', what's been broken is swept under the streets,
Of the city block that's in my brain,
Causing me a million miles of pain.

(Afterthought: This was something that just hit me. I've never really attempted to write lyrics that were stylized in this manner. I'm fully aware that it isn't the greatest thing ever, but I think it came out pretty incredibly, and represents me quite fantastically. Anyway, tell me what you thought of it; It would mean a lot to me.) :)

From blue collars to the office, forearm tattoos ... - AJEN Entertainment

In the past, forearm tattoos were reserved for sailors, bikers, and blue collar workers. However, that trend is changing rapidly as these tattoos become more and more popular in the main stream. These designs range from that of traditional tribal designs to names, symbols, and abstract images. Forearm tattoo designs for men really are a great option for men who do not wish to have their entire arm tattooed or who are looking for a smaller tattoo. This tattoo is an excellent choice because it can be visible, but it also discreet enough to not be too distracting. Itsa great ladycatcher and eye turner.

Tips On SEO And Your Online Business | Internet Marketing Search ...

Search engine optimization is vital for success on the Internet, but it can be hard to do it properly. With the right tools and knowledge, you can make sure your website gets high traffic, which will guarantee it is ranked high.

Even if you are writing about the same topic from page to page, make sure each title is unique to keep your visitors engaged. Keep titles short and to the point for the most effect. This means that your most important words should be the first one or two.

It is generally accepted that each META description tag should be different for each and every page. Also use variety when you apply tags to each individual page. You want the highest ranking possible for each page.

Based on your available resources, you may only be able to optimize your website for one or two major search engines. Keyword-rich content can help with many search engine results, but not Google or Yahoo!. , Ask. ,and Ask.com each have their own type of things that will favor certain types of SEO elements.

Plan to set up web analytics before you begin your SEO efforts. This software can help you track the success and failure of your strategies.

Increasing SEO is a game of patience. When you do these things it will not happen immediately, it will take time. Especially if you have a brand new website, the optimization process may not show results for months. You need to build a reputation, it will take time.

High quality, unique content is one of the best ways to boost your search engine rankings. If you want to get more visitors you should give them content that is unique to the niche. People stick around when you offer them information that is unique and has great content.

New content should be written and published often. Set a weekly goal for yourself, and make sure to stick to it. Your site will be much more relevant to search engines if you regularly create original content. Websites with fresh, updated content will more than likely provide their webmasters with a higher ranking.

If you want to rank high in a search engine, do your part to help out web spiders. Spiders are going through your content on a constant basis and are always pulling up your site based on keywords and other particulars; however, these spiders have to understand how to actually navigate around your site. Help them out by featuring a site map. This shows what is important on your site, and it gives the spiders an idea of how you website works.

Strategic keyword placement within your online content gets noticed by search engines that can boost your traffic. Do not put too many keywords at the beginning but make sure to put enough. Try to get your keyword into the first paragraph twice. After that, place your keyword as much as possible in the following 200 words, it should not feel overused and should flow well.

You entire website such be easy to navigate and read. To rank higher, make your site clear and functional, and include accessibility functions such as allowing fonts to be enlarged. While you are trying to optimize your site to get the best search engine results, keep the reader in mind as well.

Link directories should contain high value links and legitimate sites, if you plan to use them. A few directories have tons of outdated, badly designed sites. This is why you should be aware of who you decide to affiliate with.

Your search visibility raises if you blog on your site. This can also increase your website traffic.

Make a site map to help the search engines index your site?s pages. A site map, or navigation bar, will let the search engines know about a given page from every other page on your site. Even a small site can have a huge impact with a site map, in how a search engine will rank it.

There are several options you can use to get inbound links to your website. Article writing, message forums, press releases, directory submissions and blogs can all provide your site with traffic. The more people that link to the site, the higher its standings will become.

Blogging is a great SEO technique to use. Blogs rank well because the search engines like structured data and fresh content. Search engines look very highly upon websites with a lot of backlinks.

If you want someone else to do your SEO work, make sure they are on the up-and-up before you hand over your money. Many search engine optimizers that lack credibility will charge high prices for poor work. Look at work they?ve done for previous clients, read customer testimonials with a grain of salt, and compare what they tell you against information you can find online. You are much more likely to be satisfied with your results.

Don?t make pages that have nothing but links on them. Include them within your content, instead of allowing them to stand alone. Pages filled with only links are boring and search engines don?t rank them highly. Keeping the links on your site integrated into your text makes your content look more professional, and helps search engines rank your site higher in searches.

It cannot be said often enough: SEO is necessary in doing successful business on the Internet. Use these tips for finding the best tools and procedures to use while overhauling your website to make it search-engine friendly. The more superior in design and strategy your website is, the greater the traffic and subsequent sales you will

Why It's Important To Celebrate Family Life ? Super Single Mum's Blog

There are many important reasons to celebrate family life. These can range from taking the time to share special occasions, through to being able to maintain long term relationships across different generations. At the same time, celebrating family life can reward parents, help people understand each other through their family, and can build a strong sense of community that can be passed down to children. Whether coming together for an important event, or simply seeing each other on a regular basis, family life is always important to savour.

Sharing Special Occasions

It?s always a good idea to spend special occasions with your family if you can. These occasions can include Christmases, birthday, and Bonfire Night and fireworks, as well as weddings and anniversaries. Spending time together, even for one major event a year, can consequently add up to being a memorable occasion that can allow you to catch up, and avoid losing contact with people. Special occasions can also be more distinctive by families all being able to contribute to the holding of an event.

Maintaining Relationships

The celebration of family life is essential to maintaining relationships as you grow older. While online social networking makes it easy to stay in touch with people, it?s still important to spend actual time with each other throughout the year. If this is difficult, try to have some kind of family holiday together, even if that?s only a weekend. Maintaining these relationships is key to preventing children from growing up without contact with their cousins, or older families not being able to maintain the relationships that they had in previous years.

Reward Parents

Celebrating family life is a good way for children to reward parents and grandparents. Even if a celebration is only small and casual, it can mean a lot to people that don?t get to see the rest of their family very often. At the same time, rewarding parents can mean older children spending money on booking a holiday together, or just having a party for anniversaries and birthdays. Doing so can mean that it?s possible to maintain a strong relationship between parents and children.

Understanding Each Other

Siblings and family members can often find that they share problems and personality traits, and can talk about these with their parents or grandparents. Having a close relationship with your family can mean that you find someone that understands when you have stressful or difficulty times in your life, or when you want advice on a subject. On the other hand, it?s important to see family in order to share a sense of humour.

Sense of Community

Regular celebrations of family life can build a strong sense of community, and can help family members that feel cut off. Making meetings and events a regular part of the year can also set a good example for younger children to maintain the same kind of relationships as they get older, and can set up a positive appreciation of family that can last for a long time.

Rob James is a father of four girls. He will often buy fireworks online from Dynamic Fireworks to add a bit of ?sparkle? family celebrations. Can dynamic mapping reveal clues about flu seasonality?

ScienceDaily (Sep. 7, 2012) ? Influenza outbreaks in the United States typically begin with the arrival of cold weather and then spread in seasonal waves across geographic zones. But the question of why epidemics can vary from one season to the next has baffled scientists.

In a paper titled "Deviations in Influenza Seasonality: Odd Coincidence or Obscure Consequence," Elena Naumova, Ph.D., professor of civil and environmental engineering at Tufts School of Engineering, and collaborators from the U.S. and India suggest that the search for answers has been thwarted, in part, by the lack of standardized research methods.

This paper builds on Naumova's previous work in which she suggests a role for dynamic mapping in epidemiological research. Here, the team concludes that newly emerging technologies like dynamic mapping can be used in concert with traditional approaches, which Naumova describes as "fraught with problems." The paper was published in advance of print in Clinical Microbiology and Infection.

Naumova points out several of these problems. Data collection methods are not uniform. Researchers use ambiguous terminology and definitions. Research results are not presented in a uniform manner. "This produces volumes of information -- or noise -- that is prone to substantial measurement error and uncertainty that potentially obscures the causes behind seasonality rather than illuminating them," she says.

Another way influenza research falls short is that it doesn't take into account the behavior of the disease as it changes across time and geography. Using dynamic mapping as a tool, Naumova, the paper's senior author, and her team analyzed hospitalization records for adults age 65 and over from across the United States during individual flu seasons in 1991, 1997, 1999, and 2003.

The data, provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, were superimposed onto national maps showing average weekly temperatures. The data were then transformed into an interactive movie from which researchers could view data, including origin and intensity of the outbreak, as they appeared over time. Each season exhibited variations in disease patterns.

For example, the 1991 outbreak originated in the Alabama-Louisiana region and then spread north. By contrast, the 1997 the epidemic started in central Tennessee. The 1999 epidemic started in western Minnesota while the 2003 epidemic spread from the gulf region of Texas and Louisiana, according to Naumova. Three of the epidemics peaked in the first week of January while a fourth peaked in the last week of December. Nationally, the average peak occurred during the third week of January.

Naumova points out that the four seasons reveal the diversity exhibited by seasonal outbreaks. "In these years we see that the outbreaks points of origin shifted, as did its geographic spread," she says.

Naumova's ongoing research involves developing mathematical models for analysis of large databases to study infectious diseases and exposure assessment. In an earlier study, researchers analyzed a larger data set from 1991 to 2004. They found that over the 13 seasons, seasonal flus generally peaked earliest in the west and spread east.

While mapping reveals variations in peak timing, intensity, and geography, the factors that influence these parameters are unknown and require further investigation. In the larger picture, Naumova says dynamic mapping could potentially help fill a gap in influenza research.

"It would help give us insight into what kinds of questions to ask. This can lead to a framework from which we are able to develop new research questions," says Naumova, who adds that mapping is only one part of the puzzle. "We also must establish methodologies that use science-based definitions, reliable data and standard methods for presenting data and assessing statistics."

NYC Launches Business Customer Service Bill of Rights

This fall, there will be an enhanced effort by the City to make the business community aware of the ?Business Owner?s Bill of Rights?. Established in 2010 by City Council and the Bloomberg Administration, the Bill of Rights outlines the prompt, efficient and easily accessible services that business owners should be provided with from the City. The rights include consistent enforcement of agency rules, fair inspections and great customer service.

In June, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the launch of the City?s Business Customer Service initiative. The initiative is part of the administration?s goal to make it easier for businesses to interact with City government by creating and institutionalizing business-friendly practices. In addition to expanding distribution of the Business Owner?s Bill of Rights the Mayor?s Office is also seeking input from business owners on their experiences through a customer survey. The online survey asks for feedback about professionalism of agencies, how clearly rules and information were communicated, and about the overall customer service experience. All comments and information submitted through the survey are confidential, unless the respondents would like to hear back from the city. Any details on the location of the business or the interaction are meant to pinpoint where the City can continue to improve service delivery.?

The Business Owner?s Bill of Rights can be found by visiting www.nyc.gov/bizrights.?

The Customer Feedback form can be found by visiting www.nyc.gov/customersurvey. (Also available in Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and Korean)

$12 million in Affordable Housing Coming to Humboldt Park: 40 Jobs to Be Created and Historic Murals to Be Preserved

Chicago, IL 1400 N. Washtenaw: on April 20, 2012 at 10 am, community residents and prominent leaders will gather to celebrate the groundbreaking of Borinquen Bella, a $11.7 million affordable housing rehabilitation project by Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA). Through this project, 47 units of housing will be rehabbed and preserved as affordable. Borinquen Bella will also bring investments by creating 40 construction jobs and opportunities for local vendors.

In addition to developing housing, the project will restore two historical and culturally significant murals. Breaking the Chains located at 1456 N. Rockwell was painted by John Pitman Weber in 1971 and is one of the oldest surviving murals in the country. Honor Boricua, located at 1318 N. Rockwell, was painted by Hector Duarte in 1992. The original artists will be leading the restoration of the murals and will be at the groundbreaking to answer questions.

Juan B. Rivera, Executive Director of LUCHA says, We are excited to break walls on Borinquen Bella and to bring millions of dollars for affordable housing and build a project that will contribute to the vitality of the area. LUCHA will restore two extremely important murals which are symbols of the culture, the struggle and the spirit of our people. Arranging financing was challenging, our political leaders, our board of directors and our staff work together and made it possible. We could not have done it without our partners at the National Equity Fund, the Chicago Department of Housing and Economic Development, the Illinois Housing Development Authority and Harris Bank which have a great group of people that worked very hard to make this project a reality.

Judy Jackson, who has lived in the apartment since 2007, stated My family and I are ecstatic about the rehab. I am looking forward to moving into my new unit and having access to a new washer and dryer.

LUCHA has contracted McShane Construction as the general contractor and Landon Bone Baker Architects as architects for the project.

The event brings together various supporters of Borinquen Bella. Representatives of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the City of Chicago, the Office of U.S. Congressman Luis Gutierrez, the Office of Alderman Roberto Maldonado, State Senator William Delgado and State Senator Iris Martinez will attend.

The mission of LUCHA is to provide decent and affordable housing, housing services and education to low and moderate income Latinos and other residents. LUCHA fosters community stability in areas lacking adequate housing due to discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, religion, familial status, and disability. This is done by empowering residents through education and participation, promoting affordable housing development, providing technical assistance, rehabilitating and managing housing, advocating for resources, and reinvesting in communities. The organization has developed and manages 153 units of affordable housing.

Motorola's RAZR HD LTE coming 'exclusively' to Rogers in Canada later this fall

Amidst all the exciting chaos from yesterday's events, Canadian availability of Motorola's newfangled RAZR HD were wistfully lost. Fret not, however, as the Google-owned outfit has let it be known that its recently announced 4.7-inch slab will be coming to Canada as an exclusive to Rogers -- not to mention with a slightly tweaked moniker. The RAZR HD LTE -- as it'll be known in Great White North territory -- is still the same unit we got our grubby paws on, meaning you'll have the same 8.4mm thin body, 2,500mAh battery, dual-core, 1.5GHz S4 CPU and, naturally, that trademark Kevlar backing found on the RAZR family. There's no word yet on how much folks will have to shell out once it hits Canadian shelves "this fall," but there is a registration page open for anyone interested in being kept in the loop -- link to that is just down below.

Road to 2014 World Cup starts for European teams

By STEVE DOUGLAS

updated 12:18 p.m. ET Sept. 5, 2012

LONDON (AP) - The road to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil begins for European teams on Friday, with the top lineups expected to ease into their group campaigns after being handed some benign opening qualifying matches.

France will be eager for a fast start in Group I after being pooled with world champion Spain, which has the night off from qualifying and instead faces Saudi Arabia in an exhibition in Galicia.

The French, under new coach in Didier Deschamps, will look to avoid the kind of early slipup that marred the start to their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, when they lost 1-0 at home to Belarus.

The Belarusians are in the same World Cup qualifying group, with the teams meeting in Paris on Tuesday. First up for Les Bleus is a trip to 96th-ranked Finland on Friday.

"We'll have to be at 200 percent during both games against Spain if we want to beat them," France midfielder Yohan Cabaye said. "But we have two games to win against Finland and Belarus first to put ourselves in a good position before playing Spain.

"We have to fight with the idea of getting first place in the group."

Germany is at home to the lowly Faeroe Islands in Group C and England takes on 141st-ranked Moldova in Group H with coach Roy Hodgson acknowledging that "for us, they are going to be pretty much unknown."

With Euro 2012 finalist Italy visiting Bulgaria in Group B, the biggest test for a heavyweight European side could come in Amsterdam where the Netherlands will look to end a four-match losing run when they host Turkey in Group D.

Following the departure of Bert van Marwijk, the Dutch are under the command of Louis van Gaal and one of his first tasks is to decide between Robin van Persie or Klaas Jan Huntelaar to lead his forward line in World Cup qualifying.

Huntelaar started ahead of his fellow striker in the Netherlands' most recent match - a 4-2 loss to Belgium in an exhibition last month - but Van Persie looks in fine form after scoring four goals in his last two games for new club Manchester United.

"I'm just available," Van Persie said. "It does not matter what I think - those are questions for the coach. I am available for any position."

Turkey failed to qualify for Euro 2012 but is ranked 35th. It has the players to trouble the Dutch, who go on to meet Hungary on Tuesday.

Qualifying continues for teams in Oceania, Asia, CONCACAF and South America. In total, 76 matches will be played around the world from Friday to Tuesday.

In the European zone, only one team goes through automatically for the 2014 finals from the nine groups, so the head-to-heads between Spain and France in October and March will be key.

The Spanish have won their last three meetings and defended their European title in Poland and Ukraine this summer to claim their third major title in a row.

Deschamps, who replaced Laurent Blanc in charge of France, has eyes only on top spot in its five-team group and won't be satisfied by reaching Brazil through the playoffs open to second-place finishers.

"We aren't going to start off by saying we are going to finish second - it doesn't serve anybody any good to speak about Spain at the moment," Deschamps said. "They are the big favorites, but our target is to finish in front of them."

France is coming off a 0-0 home draw against Uruguay in an exhibition last month but should have no problems finding its form against Finland, which has never qualified for the finals of a major tournament.

Germany will play the Faeroes, Europe's third lowest-ranked team, above only Andorra and San Marino. A tougher test will come four days later when the Germans visit neighbor Austria. Sweden and Ireland are also in the group.

England will be without arguably its only two world-class players - Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole - when it travels to Moldova, which Hodgson rates despite its 0-0 draw against Albania in a recent exhibition.

"There will be a lot of thought that Moldova are not very special, not very strong, but we certainly don't go into the game with that thought at all," said Hodgson, who begins his first qualifying campaign in charge of England.

"Certainly, my message to the players is, `I don't care if they are called Moldova. As far as I'm concerned, they could be called Brazil."'

SAfrica: Media reports undermine miners' claim

MARIKANA, South Africa (AP) ? Striking miners in South Africa threatened to kill workers and managers in a nearby mine Wednesday unless they joined the crippling work stoppage.

Hundreds of the striking Lonmin platinum miners, supported by ululating women, gathered Wednesday near the spot where police killed 34 striking miners on Aug. 16. The striking miners then marched from the Marikana platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg to the nearby Karee mine, which is also owned by Lonmin, and demanded that all workers join the strike for higher wages or face violence and even death.

The striking mineworkers gave working colleagues a deadline of 1 p.m. to leave Karee mine or be killed.

"After 1 we don't want to see anybody in the shaft. Those who come to work tomorrow we will kill them," said one striker who refused to give his name. Another man shouted, "There will be more blood if we do not get 12,500 rand."

The strikers said they want a monthly minimum wage of 12,500 rand ($1,560).

A delegation of seven young strikers was allowed to meet with mine managers. They were led past the phalanx of six police armored cars and a water cannon truck to the barbed wire gate of Karee Mine. Behind the gate the Karee mine's two white managers, with an armed security guard beside them, stood with hands on hips as the strikers got down on their knees.

The line of police vehicles separated the green-roofed Karee mine complex from the throng of singing, dancing strikers and their supporters. Police helicopters hovered overhead.

The manager of the Karee mine shaft, Jan Thirion, said: "The delegation from the strikers told me that if I didn't get all the workers out of the shaft by 1 p.m. they would burn down the shaft and kill us."

The strikers subsequently left without molesting anyone at the mine, which apparently continued to operate.

Of the strikers' demands and threats, Thirion said: "It's like keeping a gun against someone's head, saying 'You pay us from here on.' If you do that you might as well close all South Africa's mines."

Methodist Rev. Paul Verryn said he found the scene between the strikers' delegates and mine managers disturbing.

"It disturbs me because clearly the hierarchies in this system are going to endanger this entire nation," he said of the gulf between black and white, managers and workers. "You come to one of the richest mines in South Africa and the squalor in which the people are living!" He pointed to the corrugated iron shacks of miners working for the world's third largest platinum producer.

Unlike previous protests, the striking miners carried only sticks and were not armed with spears and machetes that they had brandished in previous protests.

The London-registered Lonmin PLC mine has warned that the strike that began Aug. 10 could cost 40,000 jobs if it continues. The Marikana mine remains shut down with fewer than 5 percent of miners turning up for work.

Tensions are high in Marikana as allegations mount of gross abuses by police against the strikers.

Striker Lungisile Lutshetu was quoted in a Johannesburg newspaper as saying that on Aug. 16 he saw a man shot who was on his knees with his hands in the air.

"He begged for his life ... but the heartless officers riddled him with automatic rifles, which pierced through his body," Lutshetu was quoted as saying in The Star on Wednesday. Lutshetu said he and several other strikers had run away but the police followed them and opened fire. "Those in front of me were shot at close range and fell over me, and that's how my life was spared," he said, according to The Star. He said others were shot dead after being captured by police.

Moses Dlamini, spokesman for the Independent Police Complaints Directorate, told The Associated Press that many allegations have been made against police officers in connection with the shootings. He said the directorate is investigating all complaints and will give all the evidence it has collected to the commission of inquiry appointed by President Jacob Zuma. He said he could not discuss individual allegations.

Another striker, Johannes Mashabela, told The Star that he feels he is "lucky to be alive" after seeing police kill men around him.

Protesters on Wednesday waved a photograph of a young man they named as Mgcineni Noki. They said Noki was shot in the foot on Aug. 16 and was taken to a hospital.

"Police then went to the hospital and dragged him away. They beat him up and they killed him. We found him in the mortuary," said Xolani Mzuzu, a striking miner. But a review of news reports and photos from past weeks indicate that Noki apparently died in the fusillade of gunfire on Aug. 16.

Earlier reports carried by the Pretoria News show what appears to be Noki's corpse lying among other dead miners on Aug. 16. His brother is quoted as saying Noki's body was riddled with bullets.

Every atom counts in graphene formation: Nanoreactor theory could advance quality of material?s growth

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? Like tiny ships finding port in a storm, carbon atoms dock with the greater island of graphene in a predictable manner. But until recent research by scientists at Rice University, nobody had the tools to make that kind of prediction.

Electric current shoots straight across a sheet of defect-free graphene with almost no resistance, a feature that makes the material highly attractive to engineers who would use it in things like touchscreens and other electronics, said Rice theoretical physicist Boris Yakobson. He is co-author of a new paper about graphene formation to appear this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

To examine exactly what happens at the atomic level, Yakobson and his Rice colleagues took a close look at the now-common process called chemical vapor deposition (CVD), in which a carbon source heated in a furnace is exposed to a metal catalyst to form graphene, a single-atom layer of pure carbon.

Yakobson, Rice's Karl F. Hasselmann Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and professor of chemistry, and his colleagues calculated the energies of individual atoms as they accrete to form graphene at the "nanoreactor" dock where the carbon vapor and catalyst meet. With the help of theories long applied to crystal growth, they determined that, at equilibrium, some patterns of graphene are more likely to form than others depending on the catalyst used.

One hitch has been that the edge of a graphene sheet dictates how -- or even if -- current may proceed to an electrode. Grain boundaries -- transitions in the hexagons' angles that appear when islands of graphene merge during growth -- can also derail electrons. Yakobson said these edges and boundaries determine the sheet's overall electronic, mechanical and magnetic properties, so knowing the conditions under which graphene would favor edges that look like zigzags or armchairs -- or some angle in between -- is important to researchers who want to grow the material for use in electronic components.

Yakobson and his co-authors, research associate Vasilii Artyukhov and graduate student Yuanyue Liu, drew upon their knowledge of crystal growth for their nanoreactor theory. They present a comprehensive model of how atoms migrate from the feedstock -- usually a carbon-rich mist in a CVD furnace (and sometimes, famously, a cookie) -- to the catalyst and finally to the graphene lattice.

"Owing to the talents and efforts of materials chemists, graphene now grows like mold on almost anything, and from almost any feedstock," Yakobson said. "But how it looks and the shape it takes is hard to understand or predict.

"If you spill a little water on a flat, horizontal table, it will form a little puddle of circular shape, because water is isotropic -- all directions are identical, and a circle has the smallest perimeter and therefore the lowest-energy shape," he said.

But on the nanoscale, carbon atoms don't always act like water. "When carbon is 'spilled' on metal, things get more complicated," he said. "Different directions dictate different physical properties, and as a result, graphene's shape can be a polygon or a star or a flower."

That sounds like the way a crystal grows, a property not lost on the researchers.

"Despite the huge amount of research being done on graphene all over the world, almost nobody so far has treated graphene synthesis as a crystal growth process and taken advantage of the rich theoretical tool set developed in mid-20th century for semiconductor technology," Artyukhov said. "Crystal growth theory is a large and established field of science, and there are many more concepts that can be applied to graphene synthesis beyond the first steps outlined in our work."

The ultimate shape of graphene depends on the subtle interplay of energies and speed of growth. Like water, atoms take the path of least resistance, and that path can change due to slight temperature changes and variations in the carbon vapor density.

"As carbon is added in CVD growth, different sides advance with different speeds," Yakobson said.

The team used density functional theory to calculate the formation of graphene for all possible edge orientations on various catalysts, including nickel, iron, copper and cobalt. They found the energy levels of atoms can be mapped, step by step, as they leave the vapor and join the lattice at a nanoreactor.

A sheet of graphene starts to form when the first few carbon atoms attach to the catalyst and establish a nucleus around which atoms continue to settle. The graphene grows in rows as new atoms are added, but the rows don't have straight edges. Some have a zigzag pattern, others form a more complex shape that scientists call armchair. The shape of the edge pattern is dictated by the most efficient use of energy. The Rice team found that zigzag edges face a high-energy barrier at the start of a new row, but the rest of the row's atoms fall into line quickly and easily. For armchairs, the initial barrier is smaller but remains the same for every subsequent atom that docks.

Skewed edges -- in between zigzag and armchair -- grow fastest of all, because they have the smallest energy barrier to overcome to start or complete a row, Liu said. Also interesting, he said, is the finding that carbon vapor with atom pairs called dimers might prompt faster and better-quality graphene growth.

The researchers found the lagging zigzag edges are a bottleneck that, independent of the metal substrate, helps determine the overall shape of a graphene bloom. Other kinetic factors can also lead to variations that produce stars, flowers or asymmetric shapes.

The researchers were surprised to find that open-pentagon armchair edges are the most likely growth pattern under equilibrium on iron, cobalt and nickel, while zigzag edges were especially pronounced on a copper catalyst. They also found mathematical evidence that certain defects, in which five- and seven-atom polygon pairs replace adjacent hexagons, are unlikely to form except in a vacuum, an unrealistic scenario for graphene growth. That puts the new theory in line with Yakobson's previous work to show how unlikely defects are to form when growing carbon nanotubes.

Yakobson said the theory advances on one the carbon-growth community considers canonical -- thevapor-liquid-solid paradigm -- by getting right down to the smallest details.
