Stress changes how people make decisions

ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2012) ? Trying to make a big decision while you're also preparing for a scary presentation? You might want to hold off on that. Feeling stressed changes how people weigh risk and reward. A new article published in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, reviews how, under stress, people pay more attention to the upside of a possible outcome.

It's a bit surprising that stress makes people focus on the way things could go right, says Mara Mather of the University of Southern California, who cowrote the new review paper with Nichole R. Lighthall. "This is sort of not what people would think right off the bat," Mather says. "Stress is usually associated with negative experiences, so you'd think, maybe I'm going to be more focused on the negative outcomes."

But researchers have found that when people are put under stress -- by being told to hold their hand in ice water for a few minutes, for example, or give a speech -- they start paying more attention to positive information and discounting negative information. "Stress seems to help people learn from positive feedback and impairs their learning from negative feedback," Mather says.

This means when people under stress are making a difficult decision, they may pay more attention to the upsides of the alternatives they're considering and less to the downsides. So someone who's deciding whether to take a new job and is feeling stressed by the decision might weigh the increase in salary more heavily than the worse commute.

The increased focus on the positive also helps explain why stress plays a role in addictions, and people under stress have a harder time controlling their urges. "The compulsion to get that reward comes stronger and they're less able to resist it," Mather says. So a person who's under stress might think only about the good feelings they'll get from a drug, while the downsides shrink into the distance.

Stress also increases the differences in how men and women think about risk. When men are under stress, they become even more willing to take risks; when women are stressed, they get more conservative about risk. Mather links this to other research that finds, at difficult times, men are inclined toward fight-or-flight responses, while women try to bond more and improve their relationships.

"We make all sorts of decisions under stress," Mather says. "If your kid has an accident and ends up in the hospital, that's a very stressful situation and decisions need to be made quickly." And, of course, big decisions can be sources of stress all by themselves and just make the situation worse. "It seems likely that how much stress you're experiencing will affect the way you're making the decision."

Microsoft Accuses Motorola Mobility, Google of Standard Patent ...

?

Microsoft on Wednesday
accused Motorola Mobility and Google of standard patent abuse in its
latest antitrust complaint with the European Union.

In the formal competition law complaint filed on Wednesday,
Microsoft accused Motorola Mobility of not offering essential
patents on fair and reasonable terms, saying the mobile manufacturer
attempted to block sales of some Microsoft products using its
patents related to web videos.

The complaint came a week after the U.S. Justice Department and
the European Commission approved Google?s 12.5-billion-U.S.dollar
acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

?In legal proceedings on both sides of the Atlantic, Motorola is
demanding that Microsoft take its products off the market, or else
remove their standards-based ability to play video and connect
wirelessly,? said Microsoft Vice President and Deputy General
Counsel Dave Heiner in a blog post titled ?Google: please don?t kill
video on the web.?

Heiner said Motorola is demanding Microsoft to pay a royalty of
22.5 dollars for its 50 patents on the video standard for every 1,
000-dollar laptop, while a total of 29 companies only charge
Microsoft ?two cents for use of more than 2,300 patents.?

Motorola?s alleged patent abuse is called FRAND licensing
obligations, a legal acronym for ?fair, reasonable and
nondiscriminatory.? It is a principle of keeping fair licensing of
intellectual property, so as to avoid abusive patent-related
behavior and make everyone in the industry have fair access to
certain technologies.

It is not the first time that Motorola is hit with alleged FRAND
abuse. Earlier this month, Apple accused the company of violating
FRAND standards in an appealing to a German court after the court
granted Motorola?s request to remove older iPhones from the online
Apple store in Germany and permanently ban Apple?s push email
service.

Florian Mueller, a legal consultant who has been closely
following patent litigation in the tech industry, said in his blog
Foss Patents that aggressive use of standard essential patents in
lawsuits is a problematic strategy and may backfire.

For instance, on Jan. 31, the European Commission announced to
launch a formal investigation into whether Samsung has used some of
its standard essential patent rights to distort competition in the
European mobile device markets.

Fulmer reinstated to coach football

By The Pasco Tribune

Former Gulf coach Jay Fulmer has been reinstated to coach football in Pasco County, county athletic director Phil Bell confirmed by text message Friday

"It's a great opportunity to be able to coach again," Fulmer said Friday. "I want to thank the superintendent for lifting the suspension. I'm just looking forward to getting back in saddle and coaching again."

In the summer of 2010, the former Buccaneers head coach resigned following an alleged recruiting scandal revolving around two then Anclote players ? Ty'Shon Peters and top running back Kris Aratchiysky ? and both transferred to Gulf in June 2010.

Bell interviewed both players and Fulmer's son, Will, and Bell noted that Peters admitted speaking to Fulmer via text messages through his son in August 2010.

The Buccaneers continued under one of Fulmer's assistants, Ken Hollar, and went on to go 7-3 (including a forfeit victory vs. Land O' Lakes) and Hollar resigned at season's end. The players were suspended but were reinstated in Week 6 following a Florida High School Athletic Association appeals hearing.

Fulmer was put on a three-year coaching suspension and was transferred from teaching at Gulf and reassigned to Pine View Elementary School and Connerton Elemantary School. Fulmer currently teaches at Richey Elementary School in New Port Richey. The District School Board of Pasco County lifted the suspension and allows Fulmer to return to the coaching ranks. During a meeting Thursday afternoon, the board approved reinstatement of the ex-Gulf coach.

The Kentucky native arrived at Gulf in 2005 and took over for Keith Newton (now Hudson athletic director) and from 2005-10 led the Buccaneers to two playoff berths, including a school-best 10-2 record.

In five seasons at Gulf, Fulmer was 31-22 and led the Buccaneers to their first postseason appearance in 2006, after more than 70 years of the school never reaching the playoffs. In 2008, Fulmer led Gulf to another first by winning its first playoff game, defeating St. Cloud 49-35 and then falling 50-0 to Pasco in the Class 3A regional semifinals.

The reinstatement means Fulmer is eligible to apply at any coaching positions in the district.

Pasco County has two coaching vacancies open at Ridgewood and Hudson. Fulmer's son is currently enrolled at Hudson and played in two regular-season games before getting injured against Clearwater Central Catholic in September.

Buker reaches 1,000-point mark

Senior captain Emily Buker became the first female basketball player to reach 1,000 career points at Land O' Lakes Christian School.

Buker said she "felt relieved" after the playoff game against West Melbourne Christian in which she scored the record-breaking points. After playing basketball at Land O' Lakes Christian since the seventh grade, she was named team captain and hopes to be on the Florida Christian Conference all-conference team when it's announced later this spring.

Throughout her career, she has played several positions, including forward, guard and center. Although her future plans do not include any collegiate-level sports, she may pursue an interest in beach volleyball.

ValueMyStock.com | Stock Investing 101.3: Buying and Selling Stocks

By now you have learned about stocks and opening a brokerage account.? This third installment of beginner investment education will walk you through buying and selling stocks.

?

Before You Buy

Before getting too excited about buying stocks, be sure you have funded your brokerage account.? The days of having to buy round lots (buying shares in multiples of 100) are over ? you can get started with as little as $500.? Be sure the money has cleared your account and is ready to use for purchasing stocks.

You need a strategy.? Without a strategy you might as well hit the tables at the nearest casino ? your chance of success will be equal.? Most strategies fall under one of two theories:? 1) Value Investing and 2) Growth Investing.? Success can be found in either strategy, although historical test have shown Value Investing has outperformed Growth Investing on a long-term basis.? The next blog installment (101.4) will address choosing a strategy.

?

Selecting Stocks

I recommend building a list of at least five candidates.? I never buy the first undervalued stock I find, and sometimes I won?t buy any.? When I have cash to invest I will conduct my research without time constraints.? Do not rush a stock purchase just because the price is increasing; take one day or even one week to research your candidates before making a purchase.

Know what you are purchasing.? Describe the company to your friend, spouse, or even better, to your kid.? If you cannot accurately describe what this company does you should not buy it, regardless of how good it looks on paper.? There are plenty of opportunities in industries and companies you can understand.? Also avoid companies whose value is derived from financial assets such as loans and derivatives.? The true value of these companies can be very difficult to calculate.? We saw during the Lehman Brothers collapse in 2008 that financial companies can tank your portfolio due to the difficulty of truly understanding their assets.

?

Baby Steps. It's a Big World of Investing.

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Know your selling price?before you buy.? This is the most common mistake made by investors of all levels of experience.? Regardless of your strategy know at point you will exit this stock.? Make the exit point a price, not a time, as you cannot predict market forces.? All things equal, choose the company with the most attractive exit price.

?

Making the Purchase

Once you have selected your stock you will need to enter your purchase request.? You will most likely see two prices for your company:? the ?bid? price and the ?ask? price.? Be sure you understand the difference:

?

Bid:? The bid is the price that you can sell your stock for.

Ask:? The ask is the price that you can buy a stock for.

Learn more about Bid and Ask.

?

Ensure you have enough money in your account to cover the purchase plus commission.? For example, you want to purchase shares of ABC.? You have $1,000 to spend and you want to spend it all on ABC.? Your broker charges a commission of $7.99 on purchases and sales.? The ?ask price? of ABC, or the price it is selling for, is $23.34 per share.

?

$1,000 ? $7.99 = $992.01

$992.01 / $23.34 = 42.5, or 42 shares

You can purchase up to 42 shares of ABC (I do not recommend purchasing fractional shares).

?

All online brokers will have a ?Trade? command.? This command will contain options such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, EFTs and options.? Choose ?Stocks? and select ?Buy?.? Enter the ticker symbol of the stock you wish to purchase and the appropriate number of shares.? Be sure order type is ?Market?, which will result in an immediate purchase of your company at the current market price.? Those who are sensitive to any movements in purchase price can choose a ?Limit? order and stipulate the ask price to buy at, but be aware that with Limit orders your purchase may not happen if your ask is not meet, even if it is only a penny or two away from the market price.? All brokers allow you to review the order for between 30 and 90 seconds.? I stress reviewing the ticker symbol and estimated purchase total during this time; you don?t want to purchase the wrong company.? Confirm your order and you are a proud owner of stock.

?

Monitoring Your Purchase

I recommend keeping your portfolio to 12 companies or less.? For the same reason as only buying companies I understand I also like to keep my portfolio easily manageable.? You should always know which companies you are invested in.? Check your portfolio at least once a week and pull up your stocks in Yahoo! Finance or Google Finance at least once per week, reviewing the headlines of your companies for anything newsworthy.? Review your selling price every quarter, updating it as necessary.

A cool feature offered by most online brokers is an automatic buy/sell feature.? I use TD Ameritrade, where they are called ?Trade Triggers??, and I take advantage of these on every stock I buy.? These auto-commands can protect you from missing your exit price.? Using the ABC example above, say you plan on selling ABC at $58.00 per share.? Enroll ABC in an auto-sell command with $58 as your condition for selling; when ABC hits $58 your shares are automatically sold.? This is great for those who occasionally check their accounts or spend hours each day away from their computer.? I set my commands to expire each quarter, which forces me to revalue my holdings and enter my updated selling price as a trigger.? I also enjoy tracking my purchases in a custom Excel Spreadsheet, which allows me to see all my lifetime of purchases, returns, dividends and more in one location.

?

Selling

Your stocks will be sold either through the automatic triggers (if enacted) or a process very similar to the buying process described above.? If manually selling you will choose ?Sell? and enter the ticker and number of shares you wish to sell (you will be selling all shares in the specific company).? On manual sells I sell on ?Market? orders rather than ?Limit? orders, although you can argue that my enacted Trade Triggers are really preset limit orders.? During business hours the transaction is completed immediately and the sale proceeds are available for a subsequent purchase.

?

Buying and Selling Intelligently

The next education post will help you choose a strategy for selecting stocks and calculating your exit price.

Steven A. Denning elected chair of Stanford University Board of Trustees

Steven Denning joined the Stanford Board of Trustees in 2004.

BY KATHLEEN J. SULLIVAN

Steven A. Denning, the chairman of General Atlantic LLC, a leading global growth capital firm that provides equity financing and strategic support for growth companies, has been elected chair of the Stanford University Board of Trustees.

Denning, who joined the university's Board of Trustees in 2004, will begin his two-year term in July, the board announced at its Feb. 6-7 meeting.

He succeeds Leslie P. Hume, who served as chair for four years. Hume will leave the board at the end of June, after having served 11? years.

Hume described Denning as a "very active, engaged, inspirational" member of the Board of Trustees.

"Steve is the most committed, hard-working, and insightful of board members," Hume said. "He has taken a leadership role on a number of committees and projects. He served as co-chair of The Stanford Challenge and chaired the board's Task Force on Globalization, which later became the Special Committee on Globalization. He served as chair of the Endowment Strategic Review Committee and, most recently, as chair of the Presidential Advisory Committee on New York. ?

"His contributions to the university are wide-ranging, and the generosity with which he and his wife, Roberta, have supported so many areas of the campus has been truly inspiring. Stanford is fortunate to have someone as talented and dedicated as Steve to chair the Board. I could not be more pleased to have Steve as my successor."

The Board of Trustees, which currently has 33 members, is the custodian of the university's endowment ? which was $16.5 billion as of Aug. 31, 2011, the last day of Stanford's fiscal year ? and all of its properties. Trustees administer invested funds, set the annual budget and determine policies for the operation and control of the university.

Denning, a Utah native, earned a bachelor's degree in industrial management from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1970. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years and earned a master's degree in management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., in 1971.

He earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1978.

After graduating from Stanford, Denning worked for McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm, in its New York and San Francisco offices.

Denning joined General Atlantic in 1980, the same year it was founded. Currently, the company has investments in about 50 companies around the world. General Atlantic has offices in? Greenwich, Conn., New York, Palo Alto, London, Munich, Hong Kong, Beijing, Mumbai, India, Singapore and Sao Paulo.

At Stanford, Denning is an active volunteer for the Graduate School of Business, where he is a member and former chair of the Advisory Council.? (Members of the Business School's Advisory Council are recommended by the dean and appointed by the president of Stanford.)

In 2007, Denning received the Business School's Excellence in Leadership Award, which is given to an outstanding graduate of the school who has? made a mark in the corporate world and the community at large.

Denning served as co-chair of The Stanford Challenge, the recently concluded campaign that raised $6.2 billion. The campaign was aimed at seeking solutions to complex global problems and educating the next generation of leaders.

"I look forward to working with Stanford's exceptional leadership and distinguished faculty to build upon the success of The Stanford Challenge and to address the challenges and opportunities the university faces at the beginning of the 21st century," Denning said in a Monday interview.

Denning is a director of the Thomson Reuters Corp. and several General Atlantic portfolio companies. He is co-chair of the board of directors of The Nature Conservancy, a trustee of the Brookings Institution and the Bridgespan Group, and a member of the board of directors of the American Museum of Natural History.

Denning also is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the McKinsey Investment Office Advisory Council and the Georgia Tech Advisory Board. He is emeritus chairman of the National Parks Conservation Association. He previously served as a member of the advisory board of the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University in Beijing and a member of the Board of Trustees of Georgia Tech Foundation Inc.

Denning, who lives in Greenwich, Conn., is married to Roberta Bowman Denning, a 1978 graduate of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, who also earned her bachelor's degree from Stanford in 1975. The couple has two children, Robert (Columbia, '06, Stanford GSB '11) and Carrie (Stanford, '08, MA '09). The Dennings have provided support to a number of areas and programs across the university.

Private funeral for Houston set for Saturday in NJ (AP)

NEWARK, N.J. ? Whitney Houston's funeral will be held Saturday in the church where she first showcased her singing talents as a child, her family choosing to remember her in a private service rather than in a large event at an arena.

The owner of the Whigham Funeral Home said Tuesday that the funeral will be held at noon at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church, which seats up to 1,500 people. Gospel singer Marvin Winans, a Grammy Award winner and longtime family friend, has been chosen to give the eulogy, his son said.

The family said no public memorial service is planned. Officials had discussed the possibility of holding a memorial at the Prudential Center, a major sports and entertainment venue that can seat about 18,000 people, but the funeral home said it had been ruled out.

Funeral home owner Carolyn Whigham said the church service will be by invitation only, reflecting the family's decision to keep the memorial more personal.

"They have shared her for 30-some years with the city, with the state, with the world. This is their time now for their farewell," she said.

"The family thanks all the fans, the friends and the media, but this time is their private time," she said.

Houston, 48, died Saturday at a hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., just hours before she was set to perform at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards bash. Officials say she was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub.

After an autopsy Sunday, authorities said there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.

Los Angeles County coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter said bottles of prescription medicine were found in the room. He would not give details except to say: "There weren't a lot of prescription bottles. You probably have just as many prescription bottles in your medicine cabinet."

Houston's body was returned to New Jersey late Monday.

Houston was born in Newark and was raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music program for many years. Her cousin singer Dionne Warwick also sang in its choir.

Houston's family asked Tuesday that any donations in her memory be sent to the arts-focused public school that she attended as a child and that was named after her in the late 1990s.

In lieu of flowers, they said mourners should donate to the Whitney Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts in East Orange, a school serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Houston attended the school as a girl when it was named the Franklin School and was a regular visitor for many years afterward. On Monday, students held an outdoor service in her memory.

An impromptu memorial for Houston was held Sunday during a sadness-tinged Grammys, with Jennifer Hudson saluting her memory with a performance of "I Will Always Love You." Viewership for the awards show soared over last year by 50 percent, with about 40 million viewers tuning in to the program on CBS.

On Tuesday, a steady stream of well-wishers continued to stop at the New Hope Baptist Church, where the front fence was adorned with dozens of flowers, balloons and oversized cards, some with hundreds of signatures and condolences written on them.

Several people expressed disappointment that a public memorial had not been scheduled. But they also said they understood why the funeral was being kept private.

"Maybe at some point down the road, they might do something," said B.J. Frazier, of East Orange, who said she had performed as a singer with one of Houston's aunts. "But it's like they're saying today, they shared her for a long time and they just want her to themselves for now."

Gov. Chris Christie ordered flags flown at half-staff Saturday at state government buildings, describing Houston as a "cultural icon" who belongs in the same category of New Jersey music history as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

"Her accomplishments were a great source of pride for the people of the state," he said.

Houston, a sensation from her first album, was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "How Will I Know," "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You." But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy and she couldn't hit the high notes.

Houston left behind one child, 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, from her marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

Winans, in his role as a pastor, married Houston and Brown. The Winans and Houston families have been friends for years, and Houston performed with Winans' siblings CeCe and BeBe, members of one of gospel music's first families.

Winans' office at Perfecting Faith Church in Detroit and his son, Marvin Jr., confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday he will eulogize Houston.

Houston was especially close to CeCe and BeBe Winans and performed with both. She and CeCe sang "Count on Me," for the movie "Waiting to Exhale," in which Houston starred.

No. 24 South Carolina women beat Florida 62-58 (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Markeshia Grant had 20 points, making five 3-pointers, and LaKeisha Sutton scored on a left-handed scoop shot in the final minute as No. 24 South Carolina held off Florida 62-58 on Sunday.

The Gamecocks (19-6, 8-4 Southeastern Conference) appeared to be in control much earlier, going up 45-35 against a Gators team struggling to make shots. But Florida found its offensive rhythm in the second half, tying the game at 54-54 on Deana Allen's jumper with 6:32 to go. That's when Grant hit her fifth and final 3-pointer to break the tie and put South Carolina ahead for good.

Florida was down 59-58 in the final minute before Sutton's one-armed reach-around shot with 32.9 seconds to go.

Jennifer George led the Gators (16-9, 6-6) with 17 points.

Florida's Lily Svete missed a tying 3-pointer from the left corner with 9 second and Lanita Bartley missed a short putback that could've drawn the Gators closer. Sutton made a foul shot with 1.4 seconds left for South Carolina's final margin.

Tina Roy had 11 points, Ieasia Walker 10 and Sutton nine for the Gamecocks, who got to 19 wins for the first time in coach Dawn Staley's four seasons.

George added 10 rebounds for Florida, which saw its three-game win streak snapped. Allen had 14 points and Bartley 10 points and eight rebounds for the Gators.

South Carolina returned to the rankings this week after a landmark stretch of four straight wins capped by its first-ever win on Rocky Top, 64-60, over Tennessee on Feb. 2.

The Gamecocks, though, came out as flat as they had all year this past Thursday, trailing most of the way in their most lopsided loss of the year, 68-47, at Arkansas. Whatever coach Dawn Staley said to her Gamecocks the past couple of practices seemed to work.

South Carolina and Grant came out fast and on fire right from the start against the Gators.

Grant had two 3-pointers and Aleighsa Welch, a freshman making her first career start, had a putback bucket as the Gamecocks opened a 14-7 lead.

Grant's third 3 of the half midway through the period increased South Carolina's edge to 26-16.

Still, the Gators wouldn't let the Gamecocks get too far ahead and cut the margin to 33-27 on Bartley's two foul shots with 4:10 to go in the opening half. That's when South Carolina freshman Tina Roy took over. She made two 3-pointers and scored eight of the team's last 10 points as the Gamecocks took a 43-33 lead into the break.

Florida finally got its attack going in the second half. Deanna Allen had four points, George two baskets and Jordan Jones a 3 to cut South Carolina's 10-point lead to 52-48.

Moments later, Allen's wide-open jumper tied the game at 54-all ? and set things up for Grant's dramatic go-ahead three.

The Gators had their chances to pull ahead ? Stewart was short on a drive to the basket that would've put Florida up for the first time since leading 2-0 ? and were swept in a season series by the Gamecocks for the first time since South Carolina joined the SEC in 1992.

Both teams honored the late North Carolina State coach Kay Yow in the "Play4Kay" game. Florida wore pink uniforms and the Gamecocks pink socks. The coaching staffs wore plenty of pink and even the officials had pink whistles. The effort recognizes the legacy of Yow, who died of breast cancer in 2009.

Til My Heart Looks Like Yours: A Journey of Faith, Marriage, and ...

My name Kate, is short for Katherine, a very popular and common name. ? For those of you who know me personally, my maiden name is also very common. ?Common first name plus common last name equals a very non-unique name that plagued my desire to be original, especially as a teenager.

?When I was three years old my family bought a home on a cute family friendly block in a small town west of Boston, Massachusetts. ?We were really fortunate to have children living in so many of the houses on our block, and right next door to us was a family who had a little girl my exact same age. ?But more ironically than having a same age neighbor, this little girl had my same first name...and last name! ?That's right folks, my newest pal and I had exactly the same name. ?When we started elementary school we couldn't even be called "Katie (last initial)". ?We had to go by "Katie (middle initial)".

? ?When I was eight years old my father got a new job in Pennsylvania, so we moved. ?Lest you think my days of sharing my name with a close friend were over, you're wrong! ?Upon arriving to my first day of the third grade at my very tiny private school, I was introduced to another Kate with my same last name! ?What are the odds?

?By the time I reached middle school, I was so desperate for a name to call my own that I began playing around with the spelling of mine. ?Kayt, Kaitee, Kait, and finally settling on Kayte. ?I spelled my name like that all the way through the eighth grade. In high school both of us Kates played on the same field hockey team and due to our obvious difference in heights, our teammates nicknamed me "Lil Katie" and the other Kate, "Big Katie". ?These nicknames stuck all the way through high school and even to this day some of my high school friends still call me that.

?Sharing my name for so many years even effected how my husband and I named our own children. ?I nixed many a name because it was ranked too "popular" on the Social Security website. ?The funny thing about that is that God actually gave me a husband with a very uncommon last name, a gift I suppose for all the years I spent sharing my name. ?Still, I ?didn't want my children to have their last initial attached to their common first name in the event there were others with it in their classes; ?so we chose less popular ones.

?When I think back to those years struggling to assert myself as an individual, with unique qualities, not the same as someone else, I wish I had these reminders from the Lord:

?"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;? I have called you by name; you are Mine! (Isaiah 43:1 NASB)

And?

?"The LORD called Me from the womb;? From the body of My mother He named Me." (Isaiah 49:1 NASB)

?My name was important. ?It was uniquely mine even if it was not unique. ?God did not mistake me for someone else. ?He always knew my name before it was even given to me. ?If I had nothing else in this world, my name could not be taken away from me.

?These promises from God remind me of a song we sing with our campers at Royal Family Kids Camp. ?For anyone reading this who doesn't know what that is, Royal Family Kids Camp is a camp for children who are in the foster care system. ?Many of them have suffered abuse you couldn't even imagine. ?Almost all of them have suffered hurt and neglect. ?During their week at camp we seek to build them up in the Lord, teaching them about His love and promises for their life. ?One of their favorite songs which is accompanied by an intricate step routine (that almost all of them learn how to do) is called "I Am Not Forgotten".

?I am not forgotten
?I am not forgotten
?I am not forgotten
?God knows my name.?
He knows my name.?

?Light over darkness?
Strength over weakness?
Joy over sadness?
He knows my name?

?Father to the Fatherless
?Friend to the friendless?
Hope for the hopeless?
He knows my name?

?I will praise You?
I will praise You
?For I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

? I am not forgotten
?Never forsaken?

?Israel & New Breed lyrics?

?The fact is that whether we've been cast aside or grown up with plenty, our name is precious to God. ?He knows it. ?He loves it. ?He knew we would have it and it is special to Him. ?More special to Him is who we are. ?Our name might be forgotten by those around us. ?It might be commonplace. It might be cursed by some. ?But our name and the person it belongs to is loved by God. ?We can count on that.

iHacked.ca | Critics wary of Rogers's Internet study

Johanne Lemay stands by her company?s study, even though it was commissioned by Rogers Communications Inc.

The co-president of Lemay Yates Associates Inc. says there?s no arguing with her firm?s assessment of global broadband speeds and prices, which puts Canada in the top 10 of developed countries.

The LYA report has ranked Canada seventh least expensive out of 32 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development when comparing average monthly broadband subscription costs. Canada ranks 12th in average cost of a megabit per second.

?We?re not the best, but we?re certainly not in the gutter,? Lemay said.

The study used 52 million tests from the website Speedtest.net, a service that people use to test the speed of their Internet connections. It then used price points advertised by telecom companies around the world to establish a price per megabit per second. Lemay said this is a better methodology than the one used by the OECD, in which Canada ranks 25th out of 32, because that study relies on advertised speeds, rather than actual speeds delivered.

?Many service providers will advertise that they?ll deliver speeds of up to 30 megabits per second, but they?ll only deliver four megabits per second, for example,? Lemay said. ?Maybe some people will get those advertised speeds, but they?ll have to be close to the central office for that.?

Iain Grant, managing director of the SeaBoard Group, a Montreal-based telecommunications consultancy said he?s wary of the study, for the mere fact that it was paid for by Rogers.

?It?s far cheaper to pay a consultant group for a study than it is to actually lower prices,? Grant said.

He said the study doesn?t dispel the myth that Canadians pay more for Internet service than other countries ?because it?s not a myth at all. We are paying more.?

Grant said while Canada may not be faring badly in North America, it is far behind countries in Asia Pacific and parts of Europe in terms of speeds and pricing.

This is the second time in less than a year a telecommunications company has funded a study that shed a positive light on Canada?s rates.

In June, Telus Communications Corp., paid for a study to compare wireless pricing around the world, and it also showed Canada was better off than OECD studies suggested.

Grant said wireless prices have diminished slightly in the urban areas as a result of increased competition in the marketplace. However those rates are only available in ares where there is competition. Anyone living outside the major urban centres has not seen a great reduction in price.

He said he?d like to see the government step in and introduce measures to make prices more equitable, and to encourage further competition in broadband Internet services.

Stepaside Eagle likely to prevail in the 280m Flat Race at Sheffield ? Preview

A tough competition amongst greyhounds is expected in the 280 metres Flat Race at Sheffield in England on Thursday, February 9, 2012. Stepaside Eagle has been rated as the favourite to win the event, which has a winning cash prize of ?64.

The favourite dog has been performing really well in short distance races over the past few months. His last victory came in January, this year, but he was unable to make a solid impression in the previous event he took part in.

J. Smith?s trained greyhound entered that event with a starting price of 11 to 2, and he finished fourth overall. The start of the event was not a good one for him, which resulted in a lackluster show.

However, Stepaside Eagle has the speed and skill to turn things around. He is the youngest participant in today?s race, as he was born in February, 2010. He is the son of Westmead Eagle, out of Stepaside Penny.

Second favourite of the race is, Farlawns Cecil, who has been given a starting price of 3 to 1 for today?s race. He has been performing consistently recently, but needs a victory to earn more confidence of the bookmakers.

Farlawns Cecil?s last show in a 280 metres race was a third place finish. He was the favourite to win that event, but failed to live up to his reputation in the end. Today?s favourite, Stepaside Eagle, was victorious in that race, thus he has been given a better rate this time around.

However, Farlawns Cecil has the potential to outperform any other greyhound in a short distance race. The N. Melbourne trained greyhound is the son of Ballymac Maeve, out of Carrigeen Rapid, and was born in May, 2008.

Another greyhound, who has the ability to win today is, Hurtlocker. He is also awarded with a starting price of 3 to 1, and the punters will be interested in investing money on him.

Hurtlocker?s last race proved to be quite an impressive one for him, as he ended up being the victorious greyhound. He was the favourite in that event and his trainer, L. Stephenson, will be expecting a repeat of that performance in today?s event.

Things will not be easy for Hurtlocker though, as he faces a stern competition from his rivals. He is the son of Hondo Black, out of Baby Marge, and was born in August, 2009.

Lukes Mistake, trained by L. Taylorson, will enter the race with a starting price of 7 to 2. She can spring up a surprise at Sheffield, as her recent performances have been quite impressive.

Last time Lukes Mistake entered a race at this venue, she emerged victorious. She has the momentum on her side, and it will be wise, if bettors put money on her. However, only time will tell whether she will be able to make a solid impression or not.

Taylorson?s trained bitch is the daughter of Droopys Shearer, out of Eden Storm, and was born in September, 2008.

Crucial Memory and Marinas Garsun are the least favourite greyhounds to make an impression, as they have been given a starting price of 11 to 2 and 6 to 1, respectively. Although their chances are slim, they can still win, as anything can happen in a short distance race.

Discussions on Low Grade Prostate Cancer at NIH State-of-the ...

Digital radiography news Durham, NC (February 2012) ? At the NIH State-of-the-Science Conference a few weeks ago, an independent panel advised that active surveillance is appropriate for patients presenting low-grade, low-volume prostate cancer and recommended the removal the terminology ?cancer? by physicians when discussing courses of action. While active surveillance for these patients unarguably has many merits, Drs. Bruce Chabner and Matthew Smith of Massachusetts General Hospital expressed their concerns for the suggested change in nomenclature in an editorial in The Oncologist.

The panel recommended removing the term ?cancer? for patients with this early stage/low volume disease to alleviate much of the anxiety that goes along with the term. While prostate cancer typically progresses slowly in these patients and they are unlikely to experience morbidity or mortality as a result of their condition, the pathology is still consistent with the diagnosis of cancer.

Dr. Chabner stated, "I am concerned about the rush to change the perception of prostate cancer. While it is certain that we unnecessarily treat or over-treat elderly patients with low grade disease, prostate cancer, like other cancers, has the potential to kill. We are not yet sufficiently knowledgeable to know precisely which patients will progress and in which patients the disease will remain stagnant. That uncertainty needs to be communicated to our patients as we discuss screening and treatment. Changing the name will simply confuse the issue."

(AP) ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday took a decisive step toward reconciliation with the Islamic militant Hamas, agreeing to head an interim unity government that would prepare for elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The announcement immediately threw Mideast peace efforts into turmoil. By moving closer to Hamas, the Palestinian leader appeared to be closing the door, for now, to any possibility of peace talks with Israel ? although all such efforts have failed to get off the ground during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's three years in office.

Netanyahu condemned Monday's deal, saying it would be impossible to reach peace with a government that includes Hamas, which Israel and the West consider a terrorist group.

"It is either peace with Hamas or peace with Israel. You can't have them both," Netanyahu said.

A new attempt to restart low-level talks last month ended without a breakthrough. With the reconciliation deal, Abbas appears to have concluded that he has a better chance of repairing the Palestinians' internal troubles than of reaching an agreement with the hardline Israeli leader.

The Palestinians have been divided between rival governments since Hamas ousted forces loyal to Abbas from Gaza in 2007.

Monday's agreement, brokered by Qatar, seemed to bring reconciliation within reach for the first time. Previous deals have collapsed amid deep suspicions and intervention by the sides' rival foreign patrons. Abbas is backed by the West while Hamas has been supported by Iran.

Abbas and Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal said they would move forward without delay, though it appears unlikely elections can be held in May, as initially envisioned.

The two Palestinian leaders had reached a reconciliation deal last year, but disagreement over who was to head an interim government had delayed implementation. Hamas strongly opposed Abbas' choice of Salam Fayyad, the head of his Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.

It remains unclear whether an Abbas-led interim government that is supported by Hamas would be acceptable to the West, which gives hundreds of millions of dollars of aid to the Palestinians each year. The United States and Europe have said they would shun any government that includes members of an unreformed Hamas.

Still, Abbas has international backing and Monday's agreement said all Cabinet ministers would be politically independent technocrats. Western support would likely depend on whether Abbas, as prime minister of the interim government, can impose his internationally backed political platform and whether Hamas will agree to stay in the background.

The European Union offered qualified support Monday, saying it considered Palestinian reconciliation and elections as important steps toward an eventual Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

The EU, one of the major financial backers of the Palestinian Authority, "looks forward to continuing its support," provided the new Palestinian government is committed to nonviolence, recognizes Israel and supports a negotiated solution to the Mideast conflict, said Michael Mann, a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

Abbas backs those requirements, while Hamas rejects them.

Monday's breakthrough came after two days of meetings between Abbas and Mashaal, hosted by Qatar's emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The two Palestinian leaders signed the agreement in a small ceremony in Doha.

"We promise our people to implement this agreement as soon as possible," Abbas said after the signing.

"We inform our people that we are serious about healing the wounds ... to reunite our people on the foundation of a political partnership, in order to devote our effort to resisting the (Israeli) occupation," added Mashaal.

The agreement also calls for rebuilding Gaza, which has been largely cut off from the world as part of an Israeli-Egyptian border blockade, imposed after the Hamas takeover in 2007.

The blockade was eased in the past year, but not enough to revive the Gazan economy, including the vital construction industry, and many large-scale projects remain on hold.

Qatar's leader urged the Arab world to stand behind the Palestinians' "historical rights," in an apparent reference for full statehood and return of lands occupied by Israel in the 1967 war.

Arab nations may have to step in if the West refuses to work with an Abbas-led interim government. The Palestinian Authority currently receives about $1 billion a year for its budget in foreign aid, and that money could be halted if the international community deems a new Palestinian government unacceptable.

Abbas and Hamas have had bitter ideological differences, with Abbas pursuing a deal with Israel on the terms of Palestinian statehood and the violently anti-Israel Hamas dismissing such talks as a waste of time.

In recent months, those differences seem to have narrowed. Abbas has lost faith in reaching a deal, at least with the current hardline Israeli government, while Mashaal has been prodding Hamas toward a more pragmatic stance that is closer to that of the group's parent movement, the pan-Arab Muslim Brotherhood.

However, Mashaal represents Hamas in exile and appears to have had differences with the movement's local leadership in Gaza.

Some of the Gaza leaders have resisted his push for reconciliation with Abbas and moving closer to the Brotherhood, Hamas officials have said privately. Still, Hamas' prime minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, welcomed the Doha deal, and a delegation from Gaza was present during Monday's signing.

Analysts said they believed this deal stood a chance where others had failed.

"There are several indications that this agreement is a serious one, and can be implemented," said Majid Sweilim, a political analyst in the West Bank. "The president at the helm of the government means it will be accepted by the West. The Qatari sponsorship means it's accepted by the West and will be funded by this wealthy Gulf state."

"President Abbas is very interested in ending the split, particularly with the failure of the peace talks, and Khaled Mashaal is getting closer to the PLO position, in harmony with the changes of the Muslim Brotherhoods in the region," Sweilim added.
