Bush is back: Portrait event stirs up odd politics

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Keep your friends close, and your former presidents closer.

President Barack Obama is welcoming his favorite foil, former President George W. Bush, back to the White House on Thursday for the official unveiling of Bush's portrait. Given the history, the scene ought to be quite a picture.

Obama is still bad-mouthing Bush's time in office, and it's not just because of the debt and the unfinished wars Obama inherited. Obama sees Bush's economic ideas as the same as his current rival, Mitt Romney, so he lumps them together.

Which makes it a little awkward that Obama is about to preside as Bush's image and legacy are enshrined forever.

Never mind all that, say the Obama and Bush camps. This is a timeout for tradition.

The political reunion is expected to put aside any campaign rhetoric, as other gatherings among past and current presidents have, to honor nostalgia and the service of the former president and his wife, Laura.

In the heart of a re-election year, Obama will to get to rise above the fray for a day and play statesman.

He and his wife, Michelle, will host generations of Bushes for a private lunch, including former President George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush. Family members will join them.

Then, in the ornate East Room, Obama and George W. Bush will speak as the portraits of the former president and Laura Bush are unveiled. The audience will be filled with friends and officials from Bush's two terms in office.

No one close to the current or former president expects the least sign of animus Thursday, particularly given that their transition in 2009 was handled with grace and that they have since shared moments of help and healing.

"President Bush has been around politics a long time. He's been around how presidents deal with each other for a long time," said Tony Fratto, one of his former spokesmen at the White House. "He has an understanding for separating the necessities of political rhetoric from the job itself."

Still, Bush has been holding his tongue for a long time. Obama has never run against Bush, although it was easy to forget that during the 2008 race between Obama and Sen. John McCain, when Bush's tenure was so often Obama's target.

In his inaugural address in 2009, Obama declared that "we are ready to lead once more," seen by some as a dig at Bush, who was seated over his shoulder. Even now, hardly a day goes by when Obama's team does not blame Bush for a mess.

It was just one week ago that Obama, revving up campaign donors, turned Bush into a punch line. Obama depicted presumptive Republican presidential nominee Romney as a peddler of bad economic ideas, helping the rich at the expense of the middle class. He then added: "That was tried, remember? The last guy did all this."

Now the last guy is coming back.

Only 43 men in history, and five men alive, have held the job.

It will be a rare limelight moment for Bush, who has not been back in more than two years.

Obama and Bush have a cordial and respectful relationship, but they are not close.

Both are political veterans who are able to separate political tactics from what they see as an overarching community among people who have served in the Oval Office, according to people close to them.

History has marked this moment before, with grudges put aside.

When Bill Clinton came back for his portrait unveiling, Bush lauded him for "the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president." This after he ran for the presidency to "restore honor and dignity" after Clinton's sex scandal.

And when Clinton welcomed back George H.W. Bush, whom he had defeated, he said to him and his wife: "Welcome home. We're glad to have you here."

"I would be surprised if there's very much tension" this time around, said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University who has long followed Bush's career.

Obama has enlisted Bush's help on earthquake relief for Haiti, and the two stood together in New York City last year in marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on America. They have also spoken at least three times at signature moments over the last three years, including the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Still, Obama's bashing of Bush's record sets a backdrop.

"This president is looking for someone to blame," Romney said while campaigning in Colorado this week. "Of course, he started off by blaming George Bush, and that worked for a while but, you know, after three and a half years that wears kind of thin."

The White House points out that Obama praises Bush sometimes, too, such as for taking on illegal immigration.

The visit is layered with political story lines.

Bush's brother Jeb is a potential vice presidential candidate to Romney. Bush's father has developed a kinship of sorts with Obama. And then there is Bush himself, who has endorsed Romney but is still viewed by many in his party as politically toxic.

More than any president in recent memory, Bush has not just intentionally faded from the public spotlight but all but disappeared from it.

Bush was last at the White House in January 2010 to help out with Haiti humanitarian relief.

Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said the former president and first lady are grateful to the Obamas and looking forward to catching up with faces from their past, including staff at the Executive Mansion.

Jenna Bush Hager, one of the George W. Bush's daughters, told "Fox & Friends" the day will be a chance to "celebrate his work, 'cause he worked pretty hard, so I think he deserves at least a painting."

As to where it will go, she said: "Probably in the very back somewhere. I'm just kidding."

Actually, the painting will hang prominently in the formal entrance hall to the White House, the Grand Foyer.

Mediterranean diet is definitively linked to quality of life

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? For years the Mediterranean diet has been associated with a lesser chance of illness and increased well-being. A new study has now linked it to mental and physical health too.

The Mediterranean diet, which is characterised by the consumption of fruit, vegetables, pulses (beans, peas, chickpeas and lentils etc.) , fish, olive oil and nuts, has been proven to be beneficial to the health in terms of a lesser chance of chronic illness and a lower mortality rate.

A new study headed by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Navarra took the next step and analysed the influence of the Mediterranean diet on the quality of life of a sample of more than 11,000 university students over a period of four years.

"The progressive aging of the population in developed countries makes it even more interesting to find out those factors that can increase quality of life and the health of the population," as explained by Patricia Henr?quez S?nchez, researcher at the centre in the Canary Islands and lead author of the study.

Dietary intake data was taken at the beginning of the study and self-perceived quality of life was measured after the four year monitoring period. In order to ascertain whether the Mediterranean diet was followed, consumption of vegetables, pulses, fruit, nuts, cereals and fish was positively valued whereas consumption of meat, diary products and alcohol was negatively valued.

Published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the results reveal that those who stick more to the Mediterranean diet score higher on the quality of life questionnaire in terms of physical and mental well-being. This link is even stronger in terms of physical quality of life.

The Mediterranean Pyramid

Henr?quez states that "the Mediterranean diet is an important factor associated with better quality of life and can be considered as a healthy food model." Its food pyramid combines food to be eaten daily, weekly and occasionally.

Main meals should never lack three basic elements: cereals, fruit and vegetables and dairy products. Furthermore, it must include a daily intake of 1.5 and 2 litres of water. Olive oil constitutes the main source of fat for its nutritional quality and moderate consumption of wine and other fermented beverages is recommended.

Furthermore, fish, lean meat and eggs are sources of high quality animal protein. Fish and seafood are also sources of healthy fats.

At the top of the pyramid are sugar, sweets, cakes, pastries and sweetened beverages that should be consumed occasionally and in small amounts.

Human Resource Outsourcing: Cutting prices in Recessionary Times

The process of sub contracting the Human Resources services to an external agency is understood as HRO or Human Resource outsourcing. The newest trend of sub contracting or outsourcing either all or most of the non-core activities, also known to as secondary functions- has created sufficient business sense to several international organizations. The human Resource outsourcing to specialists is justified from this angle, because the human resources services in a Company does not function as a profit making center nor does it form a part of primary activities like finance or strategic planning.

Industry consultants are of the opinion that in these times of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, businesses must indulge price cutting initiatives and thinning down of non ?core functions to save on valuable resources. As a result, Human Resources services are currently finding their solution of the company?s cubicles and heading towards specialised corporations that supply the best standards of services to their purchasers that opt for Human resource outsourcing.

However, before making the outsourcing decision it?s necessary to debate the varied ways in which during which Human Resource Outsourcing are often undertaken, and also the risks concerned.

???? Complete Human Resource Outsourcing:? In such an arrangement- the complete HR operate is managed by an external provider, as well as discrete HR activities like recruitment and payroll management.

???? Shared Service Human Resource Outsourcing:???? Here, whereas keeping personal interface with the workers intact inside the corporate walls, the transactional and administrative parts of Human Resources Services are outsourced to third parties.

???? Application and Facilities Service Human Resource Outsourcing: Companies can also opt for an arrangement, where only specialised technological and physical infrastructure support (in reference to HR functions) is supplied by an HR outsourcing provider.

The strategic call of outsourcing the Human Resources Services could also be price effective and useful in improving the bottom line, however it may also expose the corporate to bound risks like:

???? Loss of control over internal affairs

???? Reduction in flexibility

???? The employer/employee relationship could also be impacted

???? The process may fail to deliver cost benefits

???? Adherence to legal and regulatory requirements is very important to avoid any complications in future

? Problems relevant to Industrial and Labor laws should be considered

To reduce the risk levels, and mitigate any probabilities of economic losses, it?s necessary to draft a certain and well outlined service agreement between the client and also the provider. This agreement should govern the Human Resource Outsourcing arrangement and operations in totality with complete transparency. This service level document should be rigorously mentioned and negotiated to avoid any future conflicts between the parties. The penalties for non compliance and also the standards of expected performance ought to even be clearly outlined in the agreement. The goal of outsourcing Human Resources Services is to redirect the main focus and energy of the business organization back to strategic affairs rather than participating the restricted and valuable resources in nonprofit creating areas like HR.

Daniel Dicker: Facebook IPO -- How Wall Street Lost the Retail Investor, Again

Wall Street blew it again. They had this one grand chance in the Facebook IPO to try to restore some of the investor confidence that has been lost in the last four years of bank bailouts and bonuses -- and they blew it.

Wall Street brings many new companies to the investing public every year -- but Facebook is no ordinary company. With 900 million users, Facebook is the application of the masses, used to connect the 99 percent and organize the protesters for "Occupy Wall Street", the Chinese dissident community and the Arab Spring. This was a company that everyone thought they understood, and the prospect of getting in on the ground floor, of owning a piece of the next Apple or Amazon or Google, excited the interest of the retail investor in a way that few other stocks will ever have the opportunity to do.

And Wall Street needed to respect that opportunity. The gains that have been achieved in the stock market since 2008 have largely been without the participation of the retail investor -- that middle-class worker who used to save an extra $20 or $100 or $500 a week to invest in stocks. But that crucial customer to Wall Street has gone unrewarded in the last ten years -- the so-called "lost decade" -- as stock indexes have gone nowhere, while corrupt bank executives and institutional investors have managed to protect their wealth and prosper through the backstop of the United States Treasury.

And retail investors have not surprisingly abandoned the stock market, moving their money into savings accounts and bond funds and annuities. They have had all their suspicions confirmed in the last four years that the stock market is a "rigged" game and have largely refused to play anymore -- even though they must engage in stocks at some point again in order to finance their kids' educations and their own retirements.

Into this backdrop comes the Facebook IPO -- this chance to deliver to the retail investor a new beginning of investing confidence. All Wall Street needed to do was deliver a fair price -- an honest price -- to the common, middle-class investor in this social network application of the masses.

Instead, what they delivered was a shafting of the retail investor to the benefit of their best customers; the venture capitalists, prime brokers and inside institutions. They did it through secret information shared only among the insiders. They did it by increasing the offering price to $38 from an initial target of $28 to $31. They did it by increasing the number of shares by 25 percent only days before the offering and increasing it yet again by opting to use a 63 million share "greenshoe". The financial media shared the blame by hyping the offering to the sky. The NASDAQ added to the disaster by postponing the initial time of the start of trading to allow institutional orders to be 'restaged' while retail orders remained in place and by not delivering prices on executed trades to retail customers, sometimes for days after the initial start of trading.

The upshot of this is hundreds of millions of dollars lost by the retail investor, as the initial price of $38 was breached on the second day of trading and has since plummeted 18 percent in a week.

The irony of this is sad but also perfect -- here we have the company of the proletariat coming to Wall Street, and instead of helping to restore their reputation, reinforced the investing public's suspicions of who Wall Street is really working to help.

What a shame. The retail investor will again go back to his bonds and his savings accounts, even though a stuffed mattress will never allow a hard middle class investor to put his kids through school and maybe retire with a bit of financial comfort. He needs the stock market as much as Wall Street needs him.

And there was an opportunity to begin to repair that tarnished and trammeled relationship last week in the Facebook IPO. But Wall Street blew it.

Can Egypt's voters force candidates to compromise?

Khaled Elfiqi / EPA

The upcoming election showdown between Islamist Muslim Brotherhood stalwart Mohammed Morsi (L) and former Mubarak-era minister and military loyalist Ahmed Shafiq has been described as a "worst-case scenario" by analysts across the political spectrum. Is that a correct assessment?

By Ayman Mohyeldin , NBC News

ANALYSIS

CAIRO -- Former Mubarak-era minister and military loyalist Ahmed Shafiq and Islamist candidate and Muslim Brotherhood stalwart Mohammed Morsi will run against each other in Egypt?s upcoming presidential run-off election, officials announced on Monday.

Out of a field of five serious contenders who ranged from moderates to Islamists to secularists, the showdown between these two has already been described as a ?worst-case scenario? by analysts across the political spectrum.

Some analysts are already calling for voters to boycott the run-off elections scheduled for the middle of June, the argument being that by withholding their vote Egyptians can delegitimize the process that led to this outcome. Also, the argument goes, by boycotting the vote a citizen can deny the winning candidate a strong mandate to govern.

Other commentators are simply reducing the run-off vote to a choice between security, which is Shafiq?s mantra, and the imposition of Islamic law, Morsi?s pledge. ?

So is Egypt facing a depressing return to the Mubarak-era or a drastic plunge into the sharia law-era?

Not necessarily either of these scenarios.?

The results of the election, and the upcoming run-off, can be interpreted much less pessimistically.? Instead of the bleak assessments being peddled now, Egypt may instead be entering an era where compromise, coalition-building and power-sharing are part of the political lexicon.

Marco Longari / AFP - Getty Images

A man demonstrating in Cairo's Tahrir square on May 29. His sign reads: "The revolution continues... No to candidates from the old regime...No to the Muslim Brotherhood....STOP".

Runoff could take Egypt's voters on one of two very different paths

There are a few facts that need to be considered when analyzing the recent vote.

Fact one: The majority of voters who went to the polls did not want Morsi or Shafiq to be president. The figures indicate Morsi garnered 24.4 percent and?Shafiq?23.3 percent. The rest of the candidates split the remaining 52.3 percent of the vote.

Simply put, more people wanted someone else to be president than they wanted either one of these two candidates.

Fact two: By garnering almost as many votes as the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Shafiq and the grassroots organization he built and mobilized over a few months has become a major cause of concern for the long-standing political force.?

Egypt's next president to be an Islamist or Mubarak's former premier?

Fact three: A majority of Egyptians have grown weary of Islamist politicians in an very short period of time. ?In fact, the majority voted for either staunchly secular candidates, Shafiq, Amr Moussa and Hamdeen Sabahi, or Aboul Fotoh, a moderate Islamist who promised not to mix religion and politics and also enjoyed the support of idealist secular youth.

In essence, this election has proved that while the Muslim Brotherhood may be the dominant force on Egypt?s streets, that doesn?t mean they are the most popular political force.

Voters lined up in Cairo to choose from five leading candidates: a socialist, two Islamists, and two with ties to former President Hosni Mubarak. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

While they are still considered the best-organized and funded political organization in Egypt, the recent results probably rattled the Muslim Brotherhood?s cage while helping them understand that they need coalitions too. In other words, the election results prove that there are forces capable of competing against the Muslim Brotherhood.

For 16 months, a debate has raged over the country?s political future.? Should it be a presidential or parliamentary system? Should it be an Islamist state? Secular? Capitalist? Socialist? The candidates tried to define themselves assuming these were the metrics the voters used.

But the results of the first round of voting showed that Egyptians en masse have yet to answer a central question about the country?s future: Do they accept change and the uncertainty and chaos it brings, or will they choose stability and the stagnation it breeds?

For the past year and four months, everything that has unfolded in this country can be seen through this prism ? a choice between change or stability.

Egypt's next president to be an Islamist or Mubarak's former premier?

From deadly street protests, to military trials, to parliamentary elections -- every time Egypt?s revolutionary movements have tried to shove the country towards radical change, forces just as eager to slow the pace of change have pushed it back from the edge.

NBC's Richard Engel spoke with former President Jimmy Carter to talk about Egypt's elections and the country's future. The Carter Center has been in Egypt monitoring the presidential elections.

So, as people call for change, just as many have overcome their apathy and said "not so fast."

When the change appears to lean in favor of the more powerful Islamist parties, it becomes more palpable for many to slow change down.

And with around 48 percent of voters now behind Morsi or Shafiq, 52 percent are now up for grabs. So what is clear is that for Morsi or Shafiq to win the presidency, they will have to win the hearts and minds of the remaining voters. ?

Now the questions is ? what can the two candidates do to secure this group?s support?

In Egypt's elections, politics is a new family affair

For Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, the message from the electorate is clear: The Brotherhood is beatable, Egyptians are tired of the Islamists? meteoric power grab, and want to see the MB reach across the political divide and move to the center. ?Morsi?s Islamist base of support is not enough to win the elections so he must moderate his party?s policies to win the support of cautious and skeptical revolutionaries, many of whom are liberal and likely secular, but nonetheless pro-revolutionary and pro-change.

In contrast, Mubarak?s last prime minister Shafiq,?has tapped into a core of the population who wants stability and is more afraid of Islamist politicians than of a return to Mubarak-era policies and practices.

And Shafiq can?t win the Presidency without recognizing that the new balance of power depends on the young, who are overwhelmingly pro-revolutionary, either as Islamists or secularists.

Watch World News videos on msnbc.com

Shafiq played the fear of uncertainty card well in the first round, but he will have to show voters that he can deliver reforms, change and democracy as well as security and stability. In other words, Shafiq?s core of staunchly secularist and anti-change, pro-stability loyalists are not enough to win the final round of elections.

So the core supporters of these two camps are not enough to win them either an all-out majority, which leaves a central question: Which candidate can overcome his shortcomings better?

Will Shafiq show undecided voters that he will bring reforms, security and democracy? Can Morsi convince voters that the Muslim Brotherhood will commit to a civil secular pluralistic state?

The candidates will have a month to sell themselves to the voters -- and the voters will have a month to decide just how they envision Egypt?s revolution playing out.

Greek journalists on strike to protest pay cuts

(AP) ? Journalists in crisis-hit Greece have gone on strike to protest pay cuts, rising unemployment, and to press for the signing of new collective wage contracts.

The 24-hour strike stopped all TV and radio news broadcasts Monday, while most internet news portals were not updating their content. No newspapers will be published Tuesday.

Greece has been caught in an acute financial crisis for the past two-and-a-half years, and is being kept solvent by international rescue loans. In return for these bailouts, the recession-bound country implemented hugely unpopular income cuts and repeatedly hiked taxes.

Resentment for the cutbacks drove voters away from mainstream parties in May 6 national elections, which resulted in a hung parliament.

New elections will be held June 17, with pro-bailout and anti-austerity parties fighting neck-to-neck.

Factors Of Consideration In Buying Seat Belts For Dogs | News ...

2950191255 5b59c282a5 Factors Of Consideration In Buying Seat Belts For Dogs

Those people who have pets especially dogs, taking a road trip involves safety precautions such as ensuring seat belts for dogs. It is a challenge in itself to take care of a life that is so dependent. Of course nature has its own ways of nurturing but some added responsibility falls on the shoulders of the pet owner or the family that owns the pet. Amongst all of the various challenges that are part and parcel of nurturing and fostering a pet, more specifically a dog, teaching him/ her road etiquette is one of the most important ones.

Not only should these dogs be trained in the course of wearing seat belts but with careful consideration, it should be entrenched in their minds that the alternative case of abandoning these elements of safety can be detrimental for them. This holds true not only for their own safety but also for the safety and security for the rest of the vehicle occupants. As it is, this prevents them from running all around the car and then become a cause of injury or suffer injury themselves. Though people might admire the adorable sight of pets hanging their heads outside the car (it is indeed a cute sight) but it is not at all a feasible setting with respect to security. There are a lot of things that need to be considered here.

Exposure of the dog to the pollution in the air increases as he/ she hangs their head outside, which can result in sickness or any other problem. Then there is the peril of knocking off into something that can have severe repercussions. Hence it is quite essential to make sure that the pet (dogs in this case) is traveling with a seat belt around them. Some dogs have a habit of seeking attention from their owner whilst they are driving. This can be very dangerous for both of them as it blocks the vision and tends to divide the attention.

Nevertheless all of these points of precaution do not mean that one abandons the comfort level of their dogs. It is imperative that the seat belt that is being selected not only proves to be a snug fit but it also does not contribute towards pinching or other irritating experiences for the innocent creature. All in all, in the course of buying seat belts for dogs, not only the safety precautions should be given importance but also the comfort of the dog should be kept in focus, the blend of these two factors resulting in an informed decision.

Lower Insurance for EV Drivers? | Hybrid Cars

Published May 25, 2012

By Huw Evans

Pile of Leafs

Although they cost more to buy or lease than internal combustion engine equivalents, electric vehicles not only save in operation costs, it appears insurance premiums can be less as well.

According to Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director of Kelley Blue Book?s KBB.com, EV owners are considered to be a careful bunch, more mature.

?They?re not the twenty something male who gets into the most fights and has the most car accidents.?

However, given that EVs still represent a tiny fraction of the overall passenger car market, it can be hard to gauge exactly what sort of premiums should be charged for operating one.

Nonetheless, as electric vehicles proliferate, so do insurance policies designed to cover them, leading to a growing level of competition. Hartford Insurance is seizing an opportunity to win over EV buyers, by providing a five percent discount nationwide.

As for the reason, Hartford is saying this because driving an EV shows support for sustainability, although the greater degree of cautiousness among electric vehicle motorists seems to be an underlying theme.

One Chevy Volt owner in correspondence with others said, ?we [all] seem to be less hurried about driving.?

According to Edmunds.com, the estimated average annual premium for a Volt in the first five years of ownership is approximately $1,452, compared to a car such as the Cadillac CTS, with costs around $2,024 per year. It?s a similar saving scenario for the Nissan Leaf, which costs around $1,500 to insure annually; by comparison, a mid-size Maxima sedan is over $1,800.

Yet there is a flipside to this. Due to the level of technology employed in cars such as EVs and plug-in hybrids, some insurance companies are charging higher premiums than regular vehicles, based on the projected costs of repairs.

A spokesperson for insurance company Progressive; Brittany Senary, said ?because newer vehicles with more expensive technology and parts [such as EVs] generally cost more to fix, they?re generally more expensive to insure. We [Progressive] don?t offer discounts because we cannot justify them based on our claims data.?

Clearly it pays to shop around.

(AP) ? London's Olympic Stadium is ready, with a pristine track, a well-manicured grassy field and rows of gleaming seats to welcome 80,000 fans. But one thing is clearly missing.

Where's the cauldron that will hold the Olympic flame?

Organizers usually keep back details about the Olympics' opening ceremony, including the flame lighting, to ensure the appropriate drama, so it's no surprise that they're being coy. But usually there is some structure ? somewhere ? that indicates where the flame will burn throughout the games.

There is one tower next to the Olympic Stadium that could solve the mystery ? the ArcelorMittal Orbit, a ruby red sculpture of twisted steel that looks like a smashed rollercoaster. Except that Olympic officials say this crazy sightseeing contraption won't be it.

"No, it's not the cauldron," said Peter Tudor, the director of venues for the Olympic Park Legacy Corp. "I would know if there was a massive gas pipe inside."

Well, if it isn't there, then where? The question has become as much of the mystery as the opening ceremony itself.

In the ancient games, Greeks lit a ritual fire to commemorate Prometheus and his theft of fire from Zeus. Then at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, a cauldron was lit ? although no one is quite certain about how that came about, said Bill Mallon, co-founder of the international society of Olympic history.

But fire really took hold at the Nazi-backed 1936 Berlin Olympics. Chief organizer Carl Diem came up with the idea of a relay starting at Olympia in Greece, and a tradition was born. Torchbearer Fritz Schilgen was chosen to light the cauldron because he was a good looking guy ? a theme repeated in 1948 when the dashing John Mark took the flame in London.

Mallon said the cauldron lighting really became a wow moment at the 1952 Summer Games in Helsinki. The Flying Finn, Paavo Nurmi, one of the best long- and middle-distance runners ever, brought the flame into the stadium and Hannes Kolehmainen, another Finnish long-distance great who competed in 1912 and 1920, lit the cauldron. The combination of local heroes and fire proved lasting.

After that, Olympic organizers stayed up late at night trying to figure out how to outdo the games before. Some memorable moments:

? An archer at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics lit the cauldron with a flaming arrow.

? In Atlanta in 1996, Muhammad Ali, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, held the torch high and bent over to light a wire that led to the cauldron ? his arm shaking but his resolve firm.

? At the 2000 Sydney Games, gold medalist Cathy Freeman lit a ring of fire in a pool of water.

Given the pressure, it's unlikely the British will go for some sort of virtual cauldron, however Earth-friendly or sustainable that might be. Historians like Mallon puts its apparent absence to the fact that the London organizing committee plans to outdo the theatrics of other games.

"There will be a cauldron," Mallon said. "I'll betcha the cauldron will rise out of the stadium somewhere."

Keeping Your Bones Healthy With Prostate Cancer | emPower ...

Did you know that nearly 70 percent of patients with prostate and breast cancers have bone involvement? Once prostate cancer is in its advanced stages, most likely it will spread to the bones causing spinal injuries and fractures. And with African-American men primarily being diagnosed with prostate cancer at later stages, they often have a poorer quality of life due to bone issues.

Dr. Kris Gaston, urologist and clinical assistant professor of surgery/urology at the University of North Carolina, is hoping to change those statistics. He recently spoke with emPower magazine about prostate cancer and the Bone Health in Focus campaign aimed at educating cancer patients, particularly those with cancers affecting the breasts and prostate, about bone health.

Tell me more about your initiative, Bone Health in Focus?

Bone Health in Focus is a campaign that promotes education on the effects of certain cancers on the bones. Prostate cancer is one of the few cancers that spread to the bones early resulting in multiple complications for patients. It can lead to debilitating fractures, hospitalization and radiation treatment. Prostate cancer affects one in six men. We want to bring more awareness to the disease and bone health, particularly among African-American men, who are twice as likely to develop prostate cancer and ultimately die from it.

What are you hoping to accomplish with this campaign?

The biggest accomplishment is education and awareness. Prostate cancer is an extremely common cancer that can be treated successfully and cured. The answer is to develop a relationship with your primary care physician and get screened. If you don?t know you have cancer, you can?t get treated.

What type of screenings should people take? In the news there seems to always be a new study on the best screening for prostate cancer. What?s your recommendation?

The standard right now is for African-American men over the age of 40 to have a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test and a physical rectal examination completed annually. These are very quick and easy to do.

Historically, African-Americans, especially men, have been afraid of being honest with their doctors when they are having issues or symptoms. How can we fight the stigma of going to the doctor and being unashamed of discussing our medical history?

You pinpointed one of the primary problems. It?s not just access to healthcare; it?s also getting engaged with your healthcare so your doctor is able to provide the best care possible, helping you to become an active driver in your life. Women play a huge role in that. A lot of women are the drivers of getting men out to the doctor and getting them screened. Bonehealthinfocus.com has a lot of information that men, women and care providers can use to help educate and dispel the myths and beliefs of cancer.

What can women do to encourage our husbands, brothers and sons to get checked out?

My advice is to engage them in the conversation to first go to a primary care physician to get screened. The primary battle for access to care is just going out and getting tested. When there is a problem, a number of us receive care in the emergency room, and at that point it?s too late.

Once prostate cancer spreads to the bone, what?s the prognosis?

The bone is weakened by the cancer and no longer has its normal function. Some men have fractures and a number of them are in wheelchairs and may require radiation or surgery.

However, we have a number of treatment options for every stage of prostate cancer. There are new therapies coming out every day. Among African-American men, diagnosis in the later stages is more common but can be treated as a result of? the slow growing process of prostate cancer.

What YOU Can Do

Visit www.bonehealthinfocus.com to receive information on cancer-related bone diseases resulting from prostate or breast cancer.

Also, if you are over the age of 40, get your annual exams (PSA and rectal exams for men and mammograms for women) in order to detect prostate and breast cancers early.

Here are highlights from Tuesday?s Analyst Blog:

Verizon Readies for Spectrum Sale

?

Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ - Analyst Report) and Vodafone Group Plc (VOD - Analyst Report), has hired Loop Capital as another advisor for the proposed 700 MHz wireless spectrum sale. The company is aggressively looking for the sale of its 700 MHz A and B spectrum licenses, announced a month ago.

Loop Capital, along with Stephens Inc., will reach to a wide range of potential bidders. It seems that AT&T Inc. (T - Analyst Report), the second largest wireless provider, and MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS - Analyst Report) will be the likely bidders. T-Mobile, a unit of Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY - Analyst Report) is not interested in the airwaves offered by Verizon.

The move will aid Verizon to gain regulatory approval for its proposed $3.9 billion purchase of wireless spectrums from several cable companies. The pending purchase, announced in December last year, is facing stiff opposition, in particular from T-Mobile and a dozen other public interest groups.

They argued that the purchase would lead to the concentration of spectrums in the hands of Verizon, which is already the largest U.S. mobile service provider with the maximum number of licenses. The deal would also allow the cross selling of each other?s products and services, and raise concerns among some politicians and consumer advocacy groups.

Verizon believes that the unused spectrums of the cable companies are more beneficial than the 700 MHz airwaves. The purchase of new spectrum will double Verizon?s capacity and provide services at a much higher speed, thereby driving data revenues and boosting its competitive position.

However, the sale of the 700 MHz airwaves depends on the successful completion of pending spectrum purchases from cable companies expected in mid-summer.

We are maintaining our long-term Neutral recommendation on Verizon. Currently, the stock retains the Zacks #3 (Hold) Rank for the short term (1?3 months).

Korean Food And Drink | Kevin Sung | The MBA Years

When Koreans go to a restaurant, they usually drink beer or soju with their meal. (The first cup is bottoms-up!) Sometimes, they also drink Makgeolli, a milky rice wine that I wrote about in a previous post. More rarely, friends or business partners may go out to special ?whiskey bars? where beautiful women pour your drinks and laugh at your stupid jokes.

I?ve mostly been drinking Cass, a light beer that?s mostly tasteless but surprisingly strong. Another Korean beer is called Hite. Both types of beer are used to make bombs, which are mixtures of beer and soju. I?ve always been told not to mix alcohol. But in Korea, bombs are not only welcome, they?re encouraged.

There are different combinations of beer and soju, each with a unique name such as atomic bomb, stink bomb, super bomb, or dirty bomb. Koreans really care about seniority, so the youngest person at the table normally mixes bombs for everybody else. The oldest person, if he pours you a drink, you have to accept it and drink it. There are no exceptions.

Mixing bombs is somewhat of an art. At the most basic level, it means pouring a soju with precise measurement into each glass and then filling the rest with beer. Sometimes, mixing is done creatively. For example, some people will stack shot glasses filled with soju on top of the beer glasses and then hit the table with their forehead to cascade all of the shot glasses into their respective beer glasses.

Korean beer costs 4,000 KRW per bottle in restaurants and bars, which is roughly $3.75 USD. That?s a pretty reasonable price, I think. However, a bottle of soju (which is basically a light vodka) only costs 2,000 KRW. So if you?re looking to drink on the cheap, you?re better off drinking soju than beer.

I guess this explains the high number of drunk people I see on the street. Sometimes, when I?m walking around the city at night, I see businessmen unable to walk straight, laughing at god-knows-what. Korean people find it uncouth to drink in public (i.e. on the street) but they think it?s acceptable to fall down drunk so long as you don?t have a drink in hand. It?s very interesting.

If a man stays out drinking too late, he doesn?t go home to his wife and children (because he doesn?t want to get scolded). However, hotels are expensive and crashing at a friend?s house is frowned upon. So most guys will just go to a spa, sober up in the hot tub, and sleep on the floor. I was told that ?the rocks on the floor will contour to your body, creating a wonderful surface.? Okay, then.

In terms of exploring the Seoul nightlife, my friends and I recently decided to visit the college town next to Hongdae. (Don?t worry, we didn?t do anything cray.) We figured college students would know how to have fun!

First of all, the Hongdae area is filthy. The ground is littered with trash. The air smells like smoke. It reminds me a little bit of Telegraph Street in Berkeley. However, our walk through the area was bizarrely awesome from an ethnographic standpoint. We saw no less than 10 different ?Ho Bars? and several instances of male?chauvinistic chest-thumping by locals. We also saw an enormous dog that would best be described as a ?dire wolf!?

We ended up going to a tiny hole-in-the-wall bar called Vinyl. The place had two tiny tables with a maximum occupancy of 10 people! However, the walls were filled with old college posters. I took a picture:

The unique thing about Vinyl is they don?t serve you drinks in glasses or even paper cups. You get a plastic baggie with a straw, Southeast Asia style! Normally, I would be turned off by such a claustrophobic place. But the decor was just so whimsical that I can?t help but like it!

In one of the earlier excursions to the Hongdae area, we visited a unique dive bar called Bar Da. From the outside, it looks like a run-down, abandoned building where serial killers stash their victims. But when you climb the dilapidated stairs and open the grimy door, you realize there?s an actual business here! The charm of Bar Da is that it?s utterly terrible. But it?s so bad, it?s good. For example, all of the menus are hand-written, half the lights don?t work, and the chairs are falling apart. It?s a horrible place, but you can?t help but love it.

Inside Bar Da, we met a Korean girl from the Philippines who told us she was in Korea to learn her native language. Being from the Philippines, she naturally had perfect English. However, the first big question she asked us was whether we could help her score some weed. ?I just want to fucking get high,? she confessed to us.

Being tourists with no intention to get thrown in jail (which is how Korea deals with pop smokers), we ignored her pleas.

Later, she asked us: ?How old are you guys?? My friends and I gave each other odd looks and then told her our ages.??Just so you know, I?m 18,? she responded. Awkward.

Since she was being very strange, we ended up just ignoring her and talking to her marginally more mature friend instead. Unfortunately, she turned out to be quite an aggressive gal, basically forcing one of my classmates to become Facebook friends with her. She also refused to believe that we were students from Berkeley, saying: ?You lie. Foreigners always lie.? Quite rude. I hope my classmate ?unfriended? her.

We left the bar pretty soon after that and ended up getting some Italian food from a local restaurant. Hilariously, it turned out to be one of those frilly places designed for young guys to take their sweethearts out on dates. Filled with flowers and lace, the interior decor resembled that of Barbie?s dream home. We decided to eat there anyway.

I?ve been pleasantly surprised by some of the so-called Western-food in Seoul. For example, ?Chicken + Beer? appears to be a very popular combination. There are no less than a dozen restaurants in Myeongdong alone that cater to this strange combination. Basically, the water gives you a pitcher of beer and a bucket of chicken. Yes, this is a thing?in Korea and it is huge!

Oddly enough, waffle restaurants are very popular in Korea as well. You may be wondering ?is a waffle restaurant what I think it is?? Yes. There is apparently a very high demand for waffles because I literally pass by 3 waffle restaurants every morning on the way to work. Myeongdong is pretty much comprised of waffle restaurants (and boutique cosmetics stores).

Imagine if Roscoe?s Chicken and Waffles came to Korea. People would literally have heart attacks from over-excitement.

All kidding aside, Seoul has been quite the adventure. But what I?m really craving is some good ol? fashioned American fast food.
